About the job

We are looking for a Corporate Counsel to support the Rio Tinto Group's operations, in the delivery of communities and social performance (CSP) and external affairs related matters.

This role is a great opportunity for a senior legal professional who is ready to take the next step in their career to join an experienced and diverse in-house legal team of a large, global metals and mining company. The role requires experience and attributes in the following areas:
  • Application of CSP standards to manage social, economic, environmental, cultural and human rights impacts throughout the life cycle of projects, from exploration, to project development, to operation and closure.
  • Support the application of consistent legal and policy advice on business and human rights matters, including native title, cultural heritage and land rights issues.
  • Understanding of the policy and regulatory framework for sustainable performance-related laws and regulations, standards and initiatives
  • Advice on compliance with international and soft law standards in the Environment, Social and Governance area

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • Significant experience in private practice or in house and be able to practice law in Australia or Canada.
  • Experience in resources law and the areas described above.
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills at all stakeholder levels and ability to manage a diverse range of matters.
