We are looking for a Principal Geoscientist to join the RTX team. This challenging role offers an opportunity to participate in discovery, implement technical and operational leading practice; contribute to specific specialist area by developing and enhancing the region's technical capability and knowledge base; and

provide technical input to regional improvement initiatives.

Reporting to the Exploration Manager, you will be responsible for:
  • Develop a good understanding of all projects within the regional portfolio and provide specialist advice to the project to assist in the progression of projects towards discovery.
  • Generate new opportunities for follow up and contribute to review of third-party opportunities.
  • Undertake technical and report writing for management and project teams.
  • Implement regional best practice for discipline/commodity by applying the technical standards and building regional capacity.
  • Implement new or refined technologies and techniques that facilitate discovery within the region by assessing the program requirements and applying technical expertise to achieve the regional RTX strategy.
  • Maintain a network of discipline specialists within Rio Tinto as well as throughout industry, academia and external R&D providers to enhance technical capacity.
  • Contribute to the management of all HSEC and compliance related activities in the region by setting and monitoring objectives to ensure standards are met and anticipating current and future risks and managing these.
  • Contribute to developing the technical capability of the region by sharing knowledge, building skills and technical expertise to recognise and act on opportunities within the region.
  • Support relationships with a range of external stakeholders within the region including government and non-government agencies in new countries, competitors and the R&D community to enhance RTX reputation and identify potential business opportunities and synergies.

About you

To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • A passionate desire to participate in discovery
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with senior technical professionals and senior leaders to achieve outcomes through the sharing of expertise, skills and technical capability.
  • A superior knowledge of porphyry copper, CRD and skarn geology rooted in 10-15 years of field experience across a variety of geological environments
  • Broad knowledge of mineral deposits and exploration techniques across a variety of commodities.
  • The ability and desire to participate in field work and travel frequently
  • Strong engagement, communication skills and influencing skills including the ability to write recommendations and reports for management and present information for a range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply technical skills to new business opportunities that lead to discovery through target generation and development of business case recommendations
  • Well-developed leadership skills including the ability to develop and mentor high performing professionals and technical teams.
  • High level technical problem-solving skills in researching complex technical issues and providing innovative solutions to technical problems.
