Summary

The person selected for this position will work on geotechnical engineering projects for mine tailings storage facilities, coal combustion residual storage facilities, and other large-scale industrial solid-waste facilities. Projects also entail completing other traditional geotechnical and civil analysis and design work related to slope stability, seepage, earth retention, and dams. Responsibilities include performing geotechnical computer modeling; specifying and interpreting soil and rock investigations, including drilling and cone penetrometer testing; overseeing on-site and in-laboratory material testing; and installing instrumentation. Project work also involves completing geotechnical and civil aspects of alternatives analyses and feasibility studies, as well as preparing plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates. In addition, client management, business development, project management, mentoring and coaching, project planning and scheduling, and workload estimating are part of this role. It requires periodic out-of-town assignments.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with a geotechnical emphasis
  • 10 years of traditional geotechnical engineering work experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification
  • Strong geotechnical analysis and design skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to modify personal schedule as required to meet project deadlines and/or client needs
  • Proven project management skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel to support project needs
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheet development
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a project team environment that encourages self-initiative
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to mine tailings and tailings storage facilities, dam engineering, seepage and slope stability, and/or advanced soil mechanics
  • 15+ years of geotechnical design experience
  • Training or work experience in engineering of tailings storage facilities or other dam facilities
  • Training or work experience in field work such as construction observation, subsurface investigations, in-situ testing, instrumentation installation, surveying, materials testing, or facility inspections
  • Task management skills
  • Interest in mining engineering, power generation facilities, and fuels industries
  • Work experience with geotechnical analysis and geotechnical computer modeling or other related software (FLAC, Plaxis, midas GTS NX, SoilVision, and/or GeoStudio)

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and must be able to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Position will occasionally require lifting or moving field testing equipment. Safety training will be provided prior to being given field work assignments. Applicants will be asked to participate in a drug screening program at the request of clients.
