Role Details

Gold Fields - Agnew is currently seeking a Planning Engineer to join their Mining department.

Reporting to the Senior Engineer: Mine Planning, you will facilitate the safe and optimal extraction of gold from underground mining operations. In compliance with site Environmental and Safety Standards, you will be responsible for all mining aspects, including delivering detailed mine planning and designs required to meet short, medium and long term mine plan.

The incumbent, with several years in underground operations, is experienced and/or familiar with most aspects of underground mining such as Drill & Blast, Load & Haul, Mine Ventilation and Mine Services to the point where they can guide junior professionals in their development journey.

This role is offered 8 days on and 6 days off roster and would be fly in fly out from Perth.

Key responsibilities will include;
  • Always act in a manner that seeks to enhance the safety culture and performance of GFA and ensures that the Vital Behaviours are adhered to at all times
  • Assist the Senior Engineer: Mine Planning with the preparation of medium and long term plans and forecasts
  • Prepare underground design optimisation, level and stope designs, and level extraction notes with due consideration to mining interactions and budget requirements.
  • Prepare the 3-month rolling schedule and report on the end-of-month compliance to plan.
  • Assist in briefing production personnel on new stopes being developed and liaise with supervisors with regard to the understanding of designs and plans
  • Maintain the forward rolling medium-term plan in the final design stage, and long term plan in the preliminary design stage in Deswik
  • Liaise with Operations personnel to communicate infrastructure requirements for mine areas and create associated action plans, 1 to 12 months, to meet the Budget Schedule
  • Liaise with the Production Engineers for short term schedule implementation
  • Ensure Geologists are aware of stope design deadlines as detailed in the 3-month rolling schedule so that stope models are presented on time to satisfy planning/production requirements
  • Prepare stope designs and layouts as required to meet the budget schedule, undertake economic evaluations of stopes and mine areas.
  • Ensure mine plans are designed, approved and distributed to support achieving the short, medium and long term forecasts
  • Ensure mine plans are designed considering all infrastructure requirements
  • Liaise with Ventilation Officer in the development of ventilation circuits for mine design
  • Liaise with the Geotechnical department in the preparation of level designs, stope shapes and mining sequence
  • Direct and lead all members of the technical and operational mining team and ensure goal unity through concise communication
  • Apprising the Underground Manager of issues that may affect safe and efficient production through frequent communication
  • Comply with and undertake additional/alternative responsibilities as reasonably requested by Senior Engineer or UG manager


Key factors to your success include;
  • Tertiary Qualifications in a Mining Engineering or a related discipline
  • Ability to obtain WA First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency
  • 3+ years of underground engineering experience, with exposure to all production phases, preferably gold
  • Mentor and develop the capability of junior and graduate engineers
  • Exposure to Microsoft office and mining software Deswik CAD would be highly regarded.
  • Exposure to Deswik IS Scheduler and Ventsim is desirable.
  • Current WA Dangerous Goods Card
  • Valid Driver's License
