Job Details

The Company

Newcrest is one of the world's largest gold mining companies. As a global business, they aim to create a diverse and inclusive environment where everyone feels safe, valued and supported to bring their whole unique self to work.

At Newcrest, they hold core values that focus on caring about people, working together and achieving a high-performance culture through innovation and problem-solving.

The Role:

We are seeking a Head of Mining for a residential position working for the Lihir Gold Operations, Newcrest in Papua New Guinea. Reporting to the General Manager, you will lead, direct and manage the Mining team, including fulfilment of all departmental periodic targets and KPI's, short, medium and long term mining strategies, resourcing and budget management to ensure the Mining team meets production and processing needs at the lowest cost.

The Lihir Island Gold Mine, located 900 kilometers from Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, is located in a volcanic caldera which retains remnant heat within its rock. In the Open Pit, temperatures of the rock can heat up to 150 degrees Celsius, with these geothermal conditions presenting 'hot ground' challenges. These challenges have allowed the innovative program of engineering works to be introduced, which has involved the introduction of robotic technology allowing personnel to undertake work from the safety of a vehicle, as well as tele-remote technology on dozers, shovels and blasthole drilling rigs.

You will have:
  • Strong technical acumen for open cut mining, particularly across hard rock challenging orebodies.
  • Extensive short, medium, and long-term planning experience.

  • Previous proven experience in developing the capability of national talent.
  • The ability to work within the site contract management system to ensure contracts are implemented.
  • Strong annual budget and planning management with a focus on cost improvement strategies
  • A strong interpersonal capability to work closely with the Leadership Team Members developing and revising strategic business plans across Pit optimisation and Life of Mine production schedules, targeted gold production schedules and strategies relating to cost effective equipment replacement.

Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
  • Minimum 15+ years relevant work experience essential in mining management roles preferably in a large-scale precious metals extraction and processing operations across hard rock mining.
  • A sound understanding and application across Geotechnical, Geological and Geothermal mining practices desirable.
  • Relevant experience in PNG Mining desirable.
  • Previous Mine Management experience working in a developing country across a challenging hard rock surface mining operation advantageous, but not essential.
  • Develops & implements mid to long-term departmental plans, changes and initiatives to achieve overall business goals
  • Lead and deliver mined gold ore to the course ore stockpile as per the budget, quarterly forecasts, monthly plan (daily, 7 day and 13 week) schedule both in terms of grade, tonnes and scheduled location.
  • Develop, deliver and own the fully integrated production schedule of Mining assets for the daily/weekly and monthly planning horizons and ensure, by collaboration with P&D, consistency with medium- and long-term plans.
  • Monitor the production schedule based on defined processes including procedures and work instructions to deliver the budget KPIs.
  • Provide technical inputs into mine plans, including grade control, mining engineering, geo-technical, geo-thermal and hydrological constraints
  • Schedule (0-3 month) and repetitive cycle (0-6 month) HV equipment maintenance and execute safe and high-quality maintenance work for Mining owned assets.

Requirements:
  • Must be willing and able to relocate residentially on Lihir Island.
