Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Signal Engineer to join the Infrastructure group in our Sector Practices team in Johannesburg.

As the successful candidate, you will:
  • be part of an elite team of signalling professionals focusing on Southern African projects with some opportunity to work internationally, if desired. As with all our positions, this position is an entrepreneurial role in which you will be able to leverage Hatch and our more than 500 rail experts globally to your ultimate success.


You bring to the role:
  • experience of the railway signalling industry in South Africa and internationally. Specific experience in designing and engineering train control systems, condition monitoring and signalling systems is required. Technical excellence and levels of efficiency found by developing better processes and
    procedures, and a proven history of teamwork and the pursuit of personal and company performance are expected. While engineering excellence is important, it is equally important to have developed interpersonal skills as internal and client interaction will be required.
  • Preparation of engineering procedures, test documentation, reports and submissions, as per project requirements
  • Manage and deliver signal engineering work packages to support the global market
  • Support testing and commissioning team, with competence to test and sign-off signalling installations
  • Design and review of signalling documentation, drawings and schematics
  • Review work of others and provide detailed and constructive commentary in a professional setting
  • Providing project management support for signalling projects
  • Provide railways signalling technical input to multi-disciplinary projects
  • Stay up to date with latest signalling systems and standards.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering; or equivalent
  • More than 10 years’ experience in the designing, engineering and testing train control systems
  • Member with an engineering professional body e.g. ECSA.
  • Registered Professional Engineer is a requirement
  • IRSE membership would be an advantage
  • Extensive knowledge of South African signalling standards, practices, and regulations
  • Knowledge of North America signalling standards, practices, and regulations would be an advantage
  • Ability to design and review signalling drawings and schematic diagrams
  • Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office packages
  • Ability to work in a cooperative team environment
  • Ability to function independently and lead a team of signal engineers
  • Telecommunications experience would be an advantage
  • Valid driver’s license and willing to travel for work.
