If you possess a strong health and safety foundation in the mining sector, this may be an opportunity for you. We are looking for two qualified individuals to plan, develop and evaluate provincial policies and programs specific to the Mining Health and Safety (MHS) program with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

What can I expect to do in this role?

  • Evaluate proposed and existing enforcement regulations, policies and programs
  • Provide technical program knowledge and develop sector-specific standards and guidelines
  • Work collaboratively with health and safety partners and stakeholders to develop prevention strategies and promote outreach programs
  • Lead and/or participate on provincial occupational health and safety program and policy development projects

How do I qualify?

Occupational Health and Safety and Mining Sector Knowledge

  • You have experience applying relevant legislation and regulations (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Trades, Qualification and Apprenticeship Act, Apprenticeship and Certification Act, Regulation for Mines and Mining Plants and Designated Substance Regulations) and applicable codes and standards in the mining sector.
  • You know workplace health and safety principles related to safety, work procedures and processes, use of equipment, machinery, tools and devices to identify safety or health hazards related to job performance or exposure to substances which may compromise the health and safety of workers.
  • You understand technical, scientific and professional (e.g. engineering knowledge) issues and current mining developments and trends in health and safety in other jurisdictions.

Policy and Program Development Knowledge

  • You have knowledge of policy and program development principles/techniques and government policy development and approval processes.
  • You have knowledge of government planning processes, program performance measures and program effectiveness criteria to enable planning and development of program and mining sector-specific strategies, standards and policies.

Research and Analytical Skills

  • You have demonstrated research, qualitative/quantitative analysis and synthesis skills to assess program effectiveness and efficiency.
  • You know statistical methods, economic theories, information systems and systems programming to access and interpret data, and support research and policy/program development activities.
  • You can conduct environmental scans, and risk assessments and analyze directions, trends, standards and policies for health and safety within the mining sector to interpret findings and develop options/recommendations to address impacts.

Communication, Consultation and Negotiation Skills

  • You have proven communication, interpersonal and consultation skills to liaise with stakeholders, balance competing interests, provide information at coroner’s inquests and court proceedings, deliver presentations and prepare briefing materials and issue notes.
  • You have negotiation, conflict-resolution and consensus-building skills to reconcile different positions and persuade clients/stakeholders to adopt alternative responses to resolve problems/conflicts.

Leadership and Project Management Skills

  • You are a proven leader and have experience managing and leading projects, including developing terms of reference, timelines and desired outcomes.
  • You have experience using computer applications for word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and graphics to prepare briefing materials, presentations and correspondence.

Salary Range: $79,007 – $114,834 Per Year
