Description

Lead Company's modeling team and develop and utilize numerical and analytic models to simulate groundwater flow and transport under steady-state and transient conditions. Modeling applications may include: Site and Basin-Scale Industrial Remediation; Groundwater Recharge, Storage, and Recovery; Source Water and Aquifer Hydrologic Characterization; Integration of Groundwater and Surface Water models; and providing technical support to the water resources team reporting to the Director of Water Resources in the Land and Water Division.
  • Construct and apply numerical models to simulate groundwater flow, groundwater/surface water interactions and transport under steady-state and transient conditions, including inverse modeling methods.
  • Apply knowledge of numerical methods, flow and transport modeling codes, and analysis of spatial data to independently develop tools that inform on-site and regional water resources evaluations.
  • Evaluate and calibrate groundwater model performance to assist in dewatering design and planning.
  • Conceptualize and plan all aspects of potential projects; prepare scopes of work and Requests for Proposal; evaluate consultant submittals and recommend consultant selection; oversee consultant's project work; edit work products; and manage project budgets and perform other project management duties.
  • Perform hydrogeologic assessments and oversee groundwater and surface water investigations for operations. Work involves research, compilation, and interpretation of sometimes complex hydrogeologic data.
  • Maintain and prepare records and reports and present technical evaluations and plans.
  • Work independently and with multi-disciplined teams to meet project objectives.
  • Perform other duties as requested.


Qualifications

Minimum

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, or related discipline and seven (7) years of related experience OR
  • Master's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, or related discipline and seven (5) years of related experience
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods used in complex hydrogeological analyses, including groundwater modeling; production well siting, design, installation, and testing; and appropriateness of different drilling methods and geophysical techniques.
  • Proficiency in working with groundwater and surface water flow modeling, and aquifer testing.
  • Experience using GIS software, including creating and maintaining maps and geodatabases.
  • Proficiency in working with physical laws that govern the flow of water in saturated and unsaturated porous media and fracture dominated systems.
  • Experience developing hydrologic and hydro-geologic analyses using USGS groundwater/surface water flow models, particularly MODFLOW.
  • Experience conducting hydrologic field investigations and preparing technical reports.
  • Experience interpreting geophysical logs to identify lithology, permeability conduits, and the presence or absence of water.
  • Capable of communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skilled in managing hydrogeological projects and budgets.
  • Ability to research and analyze information of considerable difficulty with attention to detail and draw valid conclusions.
  • Capable of organizing and managing multiple complex projects concurrently and work under pressure with frequent priority changes.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and take initiative.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work with general office equipment such as a personal computer and keyboard, facsimile machines and photocopier.
  • Ability to develop and maintain awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Skilled in following safety practices and recognizing hazards.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Certification.

Preferred

  • Eight (8) to ten (10) years of practical experience in the field of hydrogeology.
  • Analytical and numerical groundwater modeling experience. Comfortable familiarity with MODFLOW/MT3D, newer versions of MODFLOW such as USG or MODFLOW6; FEFLOW; and other codes.
  • Proficient in speaking and writing in Spanish.
  • Experience using programs - FEFLOW, MIKE Mine, GoldSim, Power BI, HEC-RAS and/or HEC-HMS.


Criteria/Conditions

  • Position is in busy, non-smoking office located in Phoenix, AZ.
  • Location requires mobility in an office environment; each floor is accessible by elevator.
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally (+/- 20%). Position requires travel to field locations by automobile and air travel.
  • Some work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes, or airborne particles.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 30 pounds) during the course of the workday.
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.
  • Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory pre-employment drug testing and on-going random drug testing.
