Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently seeking an Environmental Specialist for our Resilient Environments Group. This position will be site-based in Northern Ontario at a dry construction camp on a rotation basis supporting the COTE world-class environmental mining project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Environmental Lead/Advisor, the Environmental Specialist will support the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management (EPCM) Team on the construction of a mining project on northern Ontario.
  • Provide leadership in awareness and implementation of environmental practices to achieve environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance.
  • Support the development and implementation of the regulatory compliance system to track and demonstrate compliance with the Project's environmental and regulatory commitments and conditions.
  • On-going coordination and interface with EPCM Team and Contractor's to plan and implement environmental best practices, regulatory commitments and permit conditions into work execution to ensure regulatory compliance and corporate environmental policies are achieved.
  • Conduct inspections/audits of contractors and their work activities to assess performance, establish corrective actions, and tracking to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and commitments.
  • Coordinate and support implementation of environmental monitoring programs to ensure project regulatory criteria and objectives are achieved.
  • Managing various environmental tasks and oversees environmental data compilation, interpretation, analysis, quality assurance and field level reporting.
  • Support training, mentorship and managing environmental technicians with performing their job duties and responsibilities.


Skills / Qualifications

  • Educational and experience requirements include: degree or diploma in a science based specialization, a minimum of 5 years of industry experience in environmental compliance management during construction/operations stages, and/or equivalent combinations training and/or related experience.
  • Participation in regulatory and/or permitting approval process for large natural resources or infrastructure projects.
  • Experience conducting audits/inspections associated with regulatory commitments and permit conditions to ensure compliance.
  • Working knowledge of environmental best practices, management systems and monitoring requirements on large construction projects.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with water and other environmental sampling programs and working with large datasets.
  • Working within multi-disciplinary teams and environmental consulting firms.
  • Experience in leadership and managing/mentoring junior staff. Shares knowledge readily and encourages personal development.
  • Highly motivated, strong work ethic, independent, detailed orientated, and self-managed individual willing to work in a fast paced multi-disciplinary project team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comprehend multi-disciplinary technical reports, memos, correspondence and engineering drawings.
  • Prepared for, attending, present, and keeping records of meetings and effectively communicate information with individuals, small group situations, and other employees of the organization.
