We are an international business with interests in exploration, mining, processing of copper and cobalt in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The company operates several mines in DRC and has a fully vertically-integrated business, producing finished mineral products within the DRC.

We are currently developing an open-pit mine and building a processing plant to produce Coper and Cobalt hydroxide concentrate on site located near Kolwezi, in the Lualaba Province of the DRC.  We are recruiting an Occupational Health and Hygiene Specialist to join the team on site to ensure the project is delivered keeping all the Occupational Health and Hygiene standards in place.

Role:                                       Occupational Hygiene Specialist

Base location:                         On site near Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Being an Occupational Hygiene Specialist, you will ensure that the organization meets the necessary legislative obligations of the DRC and drive the continuous improvement of health and hygiene throughout your business on site. You will facilitate the ongoing development of health and hygiene policies, procedures and practices to make sure all staff are adhering to these standards. You will also provide advice, support and guidance to other SHREQ employees in all matters of legal compliance regarding Health and Hygiene Management. You will also be required to ensure alignment of the operation with the ISO standards. The incumbent will advise the project management team on site while reporting to the SHREQ Manager.

Job Requirements:

Hazardous Materials

  • Provide expert advice on exposures to occupational health hazards resulting from complex work processes or combinations of hazardous materials.
  • Conduct health and safety training, focusing on hazardous materials and hazard communication.
  • Conduct on-site surveys to identify and quantify asbestos-containing materials, leaded paints, and other hazardous materials.

Occupational Health and Hygiene Program

  • Develop and administer personal occupational health and hygiene programs reflective to mine & Construction activities and to comply with local regulations and to world best practice.
  • Review mandated occupational health and hygiene programs to ensure continual compliance for occupational health risks such as, hearing conservation and respiratory protection.
  • Provide support to departments in planning, developing, implementing and modifying occupational health programs.
  • Audit occupational health and hygiene programs including respiratory protection, airborne pollutants, hearing conservation, radiation risks and confined space entry.
  • Assist with the Covid-19 pandemic management, trace contracts, ensure daily monitoring of positive employees and report

Management of Risks

  • Recommend measures to include the prevention or reduction of potentially hazardous materials, including substitution, removal, engineering controls and the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Research toxicological properties of waste materials present at work sites, and selected appropriate mitigation controls to prevent exposure to employees and contractors.
  • Investigate adequacy of equipment and other conditions which may affect employee health; determined effectiveness of personal protective equipment.

Training and Development

  • Conduct training sessions on hygiene and occupational health topics, accident prevention and technical hygiene practices
  • Research, Prepare Educational Materials/Notices/Toolbox talk and techniques.
  • Organizing conferences and training.

Occupational Workplace Surveillance

  • Hazard identification and assessment
  • Operation and process identification and assessment
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) identification and assessment
  • Engineering controls identification and assessment
  • Develop techniques to control occupational exposure
  • Formulate and provide recommendations to control occupational exposure

Skills & Requirements:

  • Bachelor in Chemistry or equivalent
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification or equivalent qualification
  • 8+ years’ work experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in the Mining industry
  • Working Experience in the DRC or other Africa countries highly advantageous
  • Proficient knowledge of relevant laws, policies and procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Outstanding people skills.
  • Proficient organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks.
  • Proficiency in English is required and French highly advantageous

  • The Etoile mine and processing plant, Etoile phase II project plant expansion;
  • The Mutoshi mine and processing plant which is under construction; and
  • A significant portfolio of mining concessions.
