Cleveland-Cliffs Technology Group is looking for a Senior Geologist.

The Senior Resource Geologist will apply knowledge of geology, mining, sampling, quality assurance/control (QA/QC), reconciliation, and geostatistics to develop mineral resource and mineral reserve block model estimates, including support of short-term production models, in compliance with industry and governmental (SK-1300) best practice standards.  This position will have an appealing mixture of technical challenges within our longstanding US iron ore operations, as well as the capacity for short-duration regional travel, enabling this role to have the ability to impact future business standards across the organization. A rare opportunity for an eager, experienced, bright team member with a willingness to learn and grow into future roles and responsibilities in an exciting area of business for the Company. A unique role located near a small but thriving city, this position offers an attractive, regular 5-day work schedule while providing a myriad of workplace opportunities.

Responsibilities:

  • Assure resource estimation practices meet or exceed Cliffs’ Minimum Operating Standard (MOS) for Estimation of Mineralized Material (Resources) (GMOS-LTMP-003-B), and formalize Cliffs’ application of the Standard.
  • Using Leapfrog and/or Vulcan, and other modeling and geostatistical software (as required), assist site geologists with the development of geological models and grade wireframes and develop/complete block models and resource estimates for Cliffs’ mining properties to support short, medium, and long term mine planning.
  • Development, implementation, and ongoing monitoring of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for data collection, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC), and database security and management. Preparation of internal monthly and annual QA/QC reports.
  • Support collaboration between operational teams across sites and disciplines to ensure best practices, optimizations, and innovations are consistently and efficiently applied; assist mine geologists in the implementation of new resource data processes with a strong focus on mentoring and teamwork.
  • Support site geologists in planning of exploration or definition/delineation drilling programs to ensure orebody resource estimates meet required resource/reserve classifications. Identify and mentor collection of additional geological data (mapping, etc.) that could improve interpretations and estimations.
  • Verify historic data used in Cliffs models.
  • Review long-range mine plans for data gaps and resource risks.
  • Collaboratively lead spatial grade-tonnage reconciliations of and between models and plant-actual results.
  • Assist in timely completion of SK-1300 Technical Reports, Scoping Studies, and Prefeasibility and Feasibility Study reports related to any of the company’s resources. Liaise with Independent QPs and Consultants to ensure smooth auditing and validation of internal resource estimates and sign-off of Cliffs’ statutory technical reports.
  • Due diligence reviews of investment opportunities
  • Identify improvement opportunities and specialty geostatistical sampling programs (environmental, geotechnical, etc.) that reduce mine costs while considering safety, environment, quality, and productivity.
  • Consistently demonstrate and act in accordance with Cliffs’ Core Values: Safe Production; Customer Focus; Creating Economic Value; Bias for Action; Trust, Respect, and Open Communication; Group and Individual Accountability; Integrity; Teamwork; Recognize and Reward Achievement; and Environmental Stewardship.

Education:

  • Minimum B.S. in Geology or Geological Engineering. Comprehensive post-graduate training in geostatistics desired.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum 10 years mining or exploration experience, including at least 5 years of resource/block modeling and applied geostatistics; experience in an open-pit mining operation desirable; experience with bulk commodities desirable.
  • Experience with Vulcan and Leapfrog software and acQuire and Access databases desirable.
  • Progress towards or ability to act as a Qualified Person (QP) for mineral resources and registration as a Professional Geoscientist.
  • Familiarity with SME or other CRIRSCO member guidelines for Reporting Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves.
