Our Rail & Transit Engineering team delivers systems solutions that include alignment and track, traction power and distribution, tunnel and ventilation, signalling and train control, and communications. One of the key components of our systems delivery is System Engineering and Safety Assurance encompassing the engineering work required to manage the complex engineering of systems, sub-systems and components of a rail transit project in accordance with international standards. In light of our current and future workloads we are looking for engineers to join our Safety Assurance team.

As well as specialists with a track record of delivering Safety Assurance we are considering engineers interested in moving into this field or transit engineers looking for a new challenge. More important than Safety Assurance experience is an interest in system safety and willingness to learn. We believe that a diversity of experiences can lead to a stronger, more innovative team.

We are looking for engineers with an enthusiasm for complex multidisciplinary rail projects, who enjoy problem solving and finding solutions that meet the requirements of multiple stakeholders. If you enjoy working in a multidisciplinary environment, are willing to learn and grow, and have a general understanding of how the railway works as a system then you are the type of person we want to join our Safety Assurance team.

How will you contribute to the team?

To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • Lead the delivery of Engineering Safety Management on major projects working across all engineering disciplines and all stages of project life cycle.
  • Work with industry-leading organizations to define and solve problems, challenge decisions and facilitate our clients' thinking.
  • Work with both internal and external customers to deliver Engineering Safety Management – including technical scope definition and management, process definition, solution integration, performance analysis and assurance.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure that their needs are understood and to shape our services in response.
  • Work across the business to align process, share knowledge and drive innovation.
  • Continuously develop your skills and competence to maintain professional qualification.
  • Apply Engineering Safety Management within the rail industry in accordance with the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment and BS EN 50126, 50128 & 50129.
  • Apply Hazard identification and management techniques.
  • Author Safety Cases and Safety Justification Reports.
  • Engage in Qualitative and/or Quantitative Risk Assessment.
  • Perform SIL assessment/development.
  • Perform Reliability, Availability & Maintainability (RAM) analysis and assurance.


What will you contribute?
  • Essential – Degree qualified with a minimum 3 years relevant experience.
  • Highly desirable – Experience in developing, documenting and evidencing Safety and Assurance arguments across the complete asset / project lifecycle.
  • Highly desirable –Experience in a multidisciplinary technical environment.
  • Highly desirable – Knowledge of project management practices, processes and principles, and experience of putting them into action.
  • Desirable – Experience of applying practically CENELEC, FTA Handbook for Safety & Security Certification, or MIL-STd-882e.
  • Desirable – Track record of leading technical business functions and/or project teams within a design, engineering, engineering-construction or consultancy context.
  • Excellent written, presentation and communication/briefing skills; able to present to audiences of peers.
  • Excellent relationship skills; able to build trust and advocacy with others.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; able to engage staff and address issues effectively.


This position will be remote initially, transitioning to a combination of remote and in-office work post-pandemic. Travel (when safe to do so):
  • Must be willing to travel to project sites.
  • Must be willing to travel to vendor locations.
  • Must be able to work away from home for short periods of time.
