What will you be responsible for?
Based in North America and reporting to the HS Director - Exploration, the role is a member of the Global Exploration HS Team and will provide a high level of support to the Exploration site managers including leading the implementation of group and exploration specific health and safety processes and initiatives across Exploration North America Near Mine and Greenfields activity. The HS Manager works closely with the Americas Near Mine and Greenfields Exploration Group Executives and Directors, site Exploration Managers, Regional Drilling Superintendent and regional operational and HS teams. The role is encouraged to be field-based and requires extensive travel (>50%).

Your role will consist of
Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
Strategy
  • Working closely with the NA Near Mine and Greenfields Exploration Leadership teams to translate the Global and Exploration functional HS narrative into a strategy for the North America Exploration teams each year, with responsibility to ensure all partners understand the mission and their role expectations
  • Together with the Regional Exploration Teams, implement the Group HS Strategic Initiatives across the NA Region (2020 - FRM, LWE, LV NCAP, Fatigue & Wellbeing)
  • We ensure a risk management plan for exploration activity is generated and reviewed regularly with the Exploration Managers to generate risk mitigating action plans
  • We provide timely field HS support to the site Exploration Managers
  • In partnership with the Exploration Regional Group Executive, Director and site managers, generate a governance and verification strategy to test and accurate expectations in the field

Leadership
  • Working closely with the Near Mine and Greenfields Exploration Leadership teams, coach and mentor the NA exploration managers, supervisors and crews to improve HS cultural maturity across the function including continual reinforcement of leader accountability for safety and meaningful substandard behaviors at all levels of the interpersonal hierarchy
  • We partner with operational peers including the mine site HS Managers to ensure standardization of HS across the region, and advocate for incorporation of Exploration-generated standard methodologies at the regional and global level. Build network and partnerships through external associations with industry, government bodies/regulators
  • We partner with the NA Regional Drilling Superintendent and contractors to ensure they understand and adhere to Newmont safety standards and systems whilst encouraging and assisting these partners to volunteer input regarding improvement opportunities

Systems and Data
  • We lead the continued implementation of FRM within NA Exploration including training, reporting and generating feedback for improving content at a global level
  • We ensure Exploration Risk Workshops, Risk Register and Control Plans are developed, implemented and reviewed at least quarterly across the project (Newmont and Contractors)
  • We facilitate Serious Potential and Recordable Injury investigations to drive quality outcomes including the identification of causal and contributing factors and adequate controls actions.
  • We ensure Health and Safety Management Plan/s, Implementation and supporting plans are developed, communicated, implemented and reviewed. (Emergency, Transport, Training etc)
  • We find opportunities for sharing leading practices with projects and operations and facilitated learning lessons sessions with leadership and operational teams.
  • We undertake internal lead/lag data analytics and external exploration benchmarking to develop targeted improvement actions and mentor opportunities
  • We provide interpretation and mentorship on the application of Health and Safety Legislation which is applicable to the appropriate jurisdictions.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist
Here is what we would need to see from you!
  • Minimum of 3 years in a HS role/leadership role
  • Minimum of 10 years in a mining or heavy industrial environment
  • Tertiary qualified in OHS, safety, health, engineering or human factors (desired)
  • HS professional or hardworking operational leader with history of strong HS performance
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and audit HS systems and programs for Minesite and Greenfields Exploration
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with all levels of the regional business to reinforce leader accountability for health and safety, including the courage to challenge where leader behavior does not meet expectations
  • Qualified and experienced in Facilitation of Serious Incident Investigations;
  • Experienced in project and field risk management;
  • Solid understanding of Emergency Response including system design;
  • Qualified in Occupational First Aid;
  • Working Experience in exploration drilling activities and construction and operation of remote field camps
  • Bilingual English, French desired

  • Primary location for this position is Vancouver but candidates in other Canada locations are invited to apply
