Myra Falls mine, situated in Strathcona Provincial Park, 90kms southwest of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, has been operational since 1965 and employs 450 employees and contractors. The mine has a lifespan of over ten years. It is ramping up production to over 800,000 metric tonnes of zinc, lead and copper ore per annum, key commodities in the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

The Myra Falls mining operation was previously owned by leading global zinc and lead producer Nyrstar. Following the company’s financial restructuring in 2019, Trafigura became a majority shareholder, and the mine is now part of the Trafigura Mining Group portfolio. Trafigura Mining Group’s assets extend across Europe, Africa, North America and Latin America, ranging from wholly-owned facilities to joint ventures and minority investments.

The trading business is supported by industrial investments and assets, including majority ownership of global zinc and lead producer Nyrstar; a significant shareholding in global oil products storage and distribution company Puma Energy; global terminals, warehousing and logistics operator Impala Terminals; Trafigura Mining Group; and Galena Asset Management.

Trafigura has achieved substantial growth over recent years, increasing revenue from USD12 billion in 2003 to USD147 billion in 2020.

The purpose of this role is to provide leadership and specialist metallurgical support to the Trafigura Myra Falls Mill with the objectives of cost, quality, environmental and safety controlled production of base and precious metal concentrates.

Responsibilities -

  • Provide specialist support to the technical section to ensure that product and process developments are implemented to ensure optimum concentrate quality, based on fitness for purpose, are established and maintained to meet company smelting and marketing objectives.
  • Identify and documenting quality problems found by the inspection and test plan.
  • Provide specialist technical input to improve the quality of work in the technical section and the metallurgical laboratory.
  • Coordinate with production personnel to ensure the Mill operates to optimum metallurgical standards.
  •  Lead process continual improvement be it coaching and mentoring the operating teams or physical improvement to the process units within the plant.
  • Consistently comply with policies, procedures, agreed values and behaviours and Code of Conduct
  • Ensuring ongoing effective people management of staff by setting clear performance objectives, providing regular feedback and development through coaching and training of employees in the Production teams

Qualifications -

  • Qualifications in Metallurgy or relevant degree
  • Minimum eight years experience in a Plant Metallurgist role in a base metals flotation plant.
  • Minimum five years as a Senior Plant Metallurgist or Mill Superintendent.
  • Ability to encourage people and using their strengths
