POSITION SUMMARY

Administers advance and basic life support and medical care to sick and injured persons on surface and underground in a remote pre-hospital setting while authorized and directed by the H&S Manager and/or Physician Sponsor. Performs occupational health surveillance activities to include blood lead monitoring, spirometry and respirator fit testing, audiograms, mine rescue physicals, and drug screenings.

  • Complying with all necessary requirements put in place to prevent incidents, injuries or losses
  • Ensuring the safety and health of themselves and others in the workplace by being responsible for their actions and taking due care while performing their work
  • Identifying, eliminating, and reporting hazards as soon as practicable
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as soon as practicable
  • Disclosing all information regarding incidents and cooperating in incident investigations
  • Assisting in the resolution of health and safety matters in a positive and timely manner
  • Using and maintaining PPE
  • Providing suggestions for improving work processes
  • Assisting Management by supporting change to achieve desired targets
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job
  • Participating in risk assessment methodology
  • Participating in safety initiatives
  • Receiving training and instruction as required
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards
  • Maintaining all job required certifications
ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS – Other Duties May be Assigned
  • Assesses nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance.
  • Performs BLS, ALS and other first aid and life saving measures: Initiates/ maintains/ administers vital signs, IV/IO infusions, patent airways, medications, bandaging, splinting, back boarding, and all other emergency medical skills as outlined and in accordance with Emergency Medical Services, State of Alaska and by Greens Creek EMS standing protocols and procedures.
  • Assists in extricating trapped victims and transports sick and injured persons to treatment center via boat, float plane or helicopter.
  • Observes, records, and reports to Physician patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
  • Drives mobile intensive care unit to emergency scene.
  • Communicates with Physician Sponsor and other medical personnel via radio, telephone, or satellite phone.
  • Performs medical surveillance on employees for hazardous exposures.
  • Regularly cleans, maintains, and resupplies equipment, medical rooms, and vehicles.
  • Provides leave coverage for other MICPs on staff.
  • May be assigned to conduct industrial hygiene sampling after being trained to conduct sampling.
  • Provides off hours support in case of emergencies.



QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Certification as Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic with the State of Alaska; or National Registry Paramedic Certification with the ability to obtain a Temporary Permit or Provisional License in the State of Alaska
  • Three years or more of EMS experience as an independent advanced life support (ALS) provider
  • Current advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) and basic life support (BLS) certifications
Other Qualifications

ATF possessor’s clearance required.

Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide 5000-23 documentation of completed training.

Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.


Physical Demands


While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must be able to talk and hear. Must be able to hike with a 50lb backpack in difficult and uneven terrain. Must be able to lift 50lbs in repetition on a frequent basis.

Other Physical Demands

Vision - Constant:
  • Able to judge distances and spatial relationships to avoid accidents while driving and walking underground
  • Have clarity of vision while operating machinery, reading gauges, and identifying lithologies
  • Have clarity of vision for distances while navigating within the mine, on access roads and in helicopter
  • Able to adjust varying points of reference while safely navigating the terrain, maintaining awareness of traffic, and operating tools and machinery
  • Able to identify people and hazards in peripheral vision
  • Able to distinguish minerals by their color

Speaking - Occasional:

  • Able to clearly communicate with co-workers and supervisors on the radio and in person
Hearing - Occasional:

  • Must wear hearing protection while working in the mine


Work Environment & Job Schedule
Employees may be frequently exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may occasionally require work outside of normal work hours.
