Position Description:

Reporting to the Vent / Survey Coordinator, the Ventilation Officer is responsible for mid/long term ventilation projects including planning and troubleshooting, testing of main fan infrastructure. Unless, otherwise directed by the Vent / Survey Coordinator, mid/long ventilation planning will be driven by the yearly metal plan. The Ventilation Officer will be expected to update the ventilation construction projects schedule in accordance to the mine plan and contribute to the overall mine targets. The Ventilation Officer is expected to complete underground ventilation surveys and inspections of all main ventilation infrastructure, to keep updated with the ventilation status of active areas, update the ventilation model on a monthly basis and respond to ventilation problems, and to conduct quality control assessments of ventilation installations. The Ventilation Officer will provide ventilation plans to the Short-Term and Mid-Term Planners and the Operations team in an accurate and timely manner. In addition, effective working relationships must be maintained with the Operations team to ensure adequate ventilation conditions are maintained in compliance with Mines Regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote safe working practices and complete 5-point safety cards, as well as FLRA's for non-routine hazardous tasks. 5-point safety card to be completed on every underground trip and submitted to the Vent / Survey Coordinator.
  • Review Ontario Regulations on a yearly basis and compare to the Hemlo ventilation management plan annually
  • Determine from the 3-month plan where ventilation installations are needed on any given mining level and ensure that vent supply stock (hard duct, silencers, VIV's, starters, fans) is maintained accordingly. Issue all necessary ventilation installation instructions in a timely manner.
  • Discuss changes in ventilation systems with the Vent / Survey Coordinator, Mine Planners and Designers as early as possible to allow an effective evaluation of all possible options for effective ventilation changes.
  • Compile and issue high-quality instructions and drawings for installation or repair of main ventilation infrastructure and projects, project schedules.
  • Undertake frequent underground tours, either alone or with Operations Supervisors, in order to carry out ventilation inspections of active mine areas and travel ways, conduct all levels inspections and report on a 3 month basis.
  • Conduct QA/QC audits of installed ventilation systems, heat stress monitoring of main mining zones and report monthly.
  • Having the pressure and volume readings of primary fans used in ventilating the mine and taken at Intervals not exceeding 1 month.
  • Having ventilation plans of the mine updated at intervals not exceeding 2 months, ensuring that the current ventilation and survey information is immediately available on special plans maintained for the use of rescue personnel in the event of an emergency.
  • Reporting promptly to the Vent/Survey Coordinator or management representative (a) any defect or deficiency of which the ventilation officer is aware in the ventilation of the mine; and (b) any atmospheric contaminant level in a workplace at the mine that exceeds the exposer standard.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to any technician employed to assist the ventilation officer.
  • Daily monitoring of mine air heating system during winter months.
  • Ensure fan database is (location, operating point) updated monthly.
  • Check and maintain functionality of ventilation survey instruments - send out for repair or annual calibration when required. Ensure that functioning backup instruments are available.
  • Assist with training of new team members.
  • Assist with updating ventilation procedures and standards.
  • Updating the ventilation model and plan based on the LOM design and schedule
  • Record of ventilation standard drawings for the mine (vent doors, bulkheads, and fan installations.
  • Forecast fan and power requirements (at least yearly)
  • Participate in incident investigations that may have a ventilation related component.
  • Auditing internal ventilation or ventilation-related safety or health standards or hazard management plans.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or diploma in Mining and registered as engineer at the Province of Ontario, or Registered Certified Engineering Technologist/Technician
  • Minimum of two years underground mining experience
  • Experience in driving light vehicles in underground mine is an asset
  • Knowledge in ventilation instrumentation and monitoring tasks is an asset
  • Experience with Deswik and ventilation modelling software would be required.
  • Proficient in MS office
  • Proficient in Oracle system
