Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Purpose

Carry out the activities entrusted by the Legal Affairs Manager, such as legal support to business clients, analyzing and advising the Company, writing and processing of legal documents, in order to safeguard the interests of the Company.

Essential Duties

Key Accountabilities
- Respond to requests for legal advice received from the different areas or departments of the Company in coordination with the Legal Affairs Manager.
- Report to the Legal Affairs Manager progress in the management of each of the matters entrusted to him/her.
- Advice on strategies, procedures and plans on the relations with the communities affected by the Company's operations and participate as part of the negotiating teams in the various meetings that the Company holds with surrounding communities.
- Advice and participate in proceedings related to conflict management, such as environmental claims, land claims, community claims.
- Advice and participate in discussions or negotiations with civil institutions and government authorities on the execution of the Mineral Agreement with the Republic of Suriname and the performance of permits obtained.
- Advice and participate in planning meetings with the different areas of the Company to obtain the needed legal permits.
- Detect possible threats against the Company and coordinate preventive actions involving the police authorities and the public prosecutor.
- Follow up and maintain the statistics of labor, civil and criminal trials to anticipate legal contingencies to the organization.
- Review files and legal proceedings of interest to the Company, as well as instruct, analyze and be responsible for processing the lawsuits in which the Company is a party.
- Draft the demands presented and the legal documents in the various areas of law, as required by the case, as well as collecting, selecting and studying the legal information in coordination with the external advisors and the different areas of the Company.
- Review of easement contracts, purchase commitments and documents necessary for the acquisition of mining rights by the company.
- Execute prevention and mitigation actions against invasions or infringements of Company rights.
- In coordination with Legal Affairs Manager, conduct legal research, provide advice and draft documents on topics as assigned.
- Represent Newmont Suriname under the guidance of the Legal Affairs Manager with local authorities and governmental departments on legal issues, in order to present and support the legal position of the Company.
- Represent Newmont Suriname Legal Team in internal and external forums participating in regional and global initiatives as required.

Training & Experience

Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- University Degree (Master) in Surinamese Law.
- At least eight years legal experience in practicing law in Suriname or as a company legal counsel.
- Excellent written and oral communications skill.
- Advanced Dutch ad English proficiency is required.
- Ability to manage heavy workload, high-pressure environment and working in multiple time zones.
- Immune to stress.
- Familiarity with mining or mining law is a plus.

Proactively integrating the legal perspective in the business of the Company by stimulating that the several departments of the Company seek legal advice (preferably at the start of their endeavor).
Since the in-house legal department is relatively new, support the consolidation of a standard mode of operation to manage the heavy workload, including the division of work and the building of an effective partnership with the business and regional and corporate key stakeholders

Working Conditions/Environment
Position is based at the Paramaribo-office and may require travel to the Merian operational site and other domestic sites.
Working Relationships
Communicate and work effectively with in-house Legal Affairs Manager and South America & Corporate Legal Departments.
