Principal Engineer Maintenance

Location: CORPORATE OFFICES - COLUMBUS, MT (Greater Billings, MT Area)

Position Purpose and Summary:

The Principal Engineer will be responsible for all aspects of mobile, electrical, fixed infrastructure, structural, planned maintenance, new technology, and associated operations/systems across the Montana Operations. The incumbent will implement and oversee the Montana Operations' Maintenance strategy and provide assurance to enable the function to drive business performance and ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements as well as alignment with the SibanyeStillwater group guidance and strategy. This position will have oversight of Maintenance groups and work to align both proactive and reactive work packages. Ensuring a safe and environmentally excellent setting for the maintenance department(s) is paramount to the success of the Region. Responsibilities will include safety vision, environmental compliance, budgeting practices, achieving operational objectives, planning, and execution of quality development and cost targets. The incumbent will drive the creation of an engaged workplace culture and provide the leadership that promotes continually exploring new technologies to improve worker safety and efficiencies throughout the operations. The successful candidate will represent the Montana Operations and its values to all employees; coordinate resources and efforts to compliment other areas in realizing overall operational goals.

Essential Functions:

  • Drive and participates actively in the formulating and reviewing overall long-term strategies for the Maintenance function by identifying the short, medium- and long-term needs in support of the long-term strategic direction of the Montana organization.
  • Provide Maintenance expertise and advise Executive Management on strategic issues within the scope of the Maintenance function that could impact on business.
  • Interpret Sibanye-Stillwater business and Maintenance strategies and plans for the company to translate into the vision, strategic and operational plans for the Maintenance function.
  • Ensure maintenance strategic and operational plans are executed in all operations, and engineering audits conducted frequently in the Maintenance function from a corporate and Regional perspective.
  • Analyze benchmarked figures to highlight long-term, cost-effective opportunities, make recommendations to the company based on these figures and results.
  • Investigate business implications of medium- and long-term planning using knowledge of pure theory and knowledge of current trends and developments to devise or modify new or existing procedures and systems.
  • Keeps abreast of latest developments, innovations, and technologies nationally and international best practice with an emphasis on maintenance aspects, by means of liaising with other mining and research organizations, and by representing Sibanye-Stillwater at the industry level in the Region.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities and synergies both inside and outside current operational areas.
  • Set goals, establish priorities, manage the resource, and develop concepts and approaches, review projects progress and results, and make management decisions.
  • Establish and execute the three months to two-year planning strategies that support the growth of the operation.
  • Oversee, direct and evaluate maintenance programs, plans, and criteria for a variety of activities and ensure alignment to business needs and that of the Group.
  • Provide leadership in terms of strategic integration and alignment, specialist advice and guidance, and the creation of a strong Engineering/ Maintenance culture by conducting regular engagements with teams.
  • Ensure compliance through regular audits of company standards, guidelines, legal requirements, and best practices.
  • Participates in the selection of consultants, oversees, and reviews their work product.
  • Manage stakeholders and/or acts as a liaison between agencies or work units and other agencies, work units, organizations, suppliers, etc.
  • Consults and/or negotiates regularly with other corporate functions to achieve outcomes favorable to the discipline or the resolution of issues that affect the discipline or its people, to enhance the image of the Engineering function.

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required:

  • More than 15 years' experience in a related role, of which 7 should have been at a senior management level or experience in a functional area.
  • Lead in commitment, accountability, respect, enabling, and safety including character, teamwork, communication, business sense, and vision.
  • Strong ability to coach and mentor others, both peers and subordinates.
  • Solid understanding and applying of MSHA/OSHA regulations and compliance.
  • Bachelor's Degree or similar from a recognized institution of higher learning. (An advanced degree and/or MBA would be advantageous)
  • Proficiency in mine systems, cost management, and productivity enhancement.
  • Experience with underground mining methods, narrow vein preferred.
  • Proficiency in the preparation of operating and capital budgets.
  • Experienced in PC based software programs, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and business-based software (Oracle/JDE or equivalent).
  • Ability to drive planning and scheduling of work and then execute on them.
  • Improve each Group as it pertains to the Operational Management System (OMS).
  • Identify and define high performers within the Group and train and develop these employees for future promotional roles
