Redpath Mongolia LLC has an opening for a Mine Captainto join their dynamic team at the Oyu Tolgoi Project in Mongolia. The site is situated in Southern Mongolia in the heart of the Gobi Desert flatlands.

Closing: May 18, 2021

Location: Oyu Tolgoi

Rotation: 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off *Due to current Covid-19 travel restrictions, the rotation may be amended. Once covid-19 travel restrictions are eased, you will return to the above roster. Current rotation estimate is 133 days: 2 weeks of quarantine on entry to Mongolia; 11 weeks of work at 14 days on 3 days off; 2 weeks of quarantine when returning to home country; 4 weeks off.

Shift Length: 12 hours

Job Description:

The Mine Captain is responsible for managing and leading the day-to-day mining related operations, interacting with the Mine Supervisors and mine personnel from various departments to ensure that all aspects of the underground operations are being met and optimized to achieve Company and Client planned objectives and ensure the safety of yourself and others within your designated area of responsibility.

Roles and Responsibilities:

General:
  • Effectively supervise and coach performance by directing and coordinating all underground operations to:
    • Enhance the team's capacity to complete internal projects, important planning and scheduling work
    • Ensure daily production/development requirements
    • Ensure supervisors pre-plan their day and are provided with contingencies
    • Work with maintenance and engineering and planning departments to ensure daily, weekly and monthly plans are aligned and agreed
    • Comply with all prescribed legislated requirements
    • Ensure complete and accurate turnover information is provided for oncoming shift
  • Having the authority and responsibility to effectively communicate and listen to key stakeholders at all levels.
  • Conduct daily reviews of safety process and standard operating procedures
  • Regularly review safety and standard operating procedures with mining personnel
  • Conduct workplace inspections to ensure compliance with safety processes and standards
  • Provide advice and guidance to mining personnel on compliance issues
  • Report non-compliance and ensure communications throughout the mine to not repeat event
  • Ensure employees understand and follow policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance of Company and Client policies and procedures, and, legislated requirements. Provide and support training within the mine department. Hold people accountable for non-compliance.
  • Complete organization and planning of the following:
  • Manpower, materials and equipment
  • Providing innovative improvements as suggested by department
  • Assist in developing and monitor work schedules
  • Monitor and control costs within budget parameters
  • Zero accidents and incidents, no environmental incidents and good employee health
  • Frequent workplace inspections to ensure all safety and regulatory requirements are being met
  • Isolate incident area, reporting incident and participate in investigation and effectively organize
  • Meet and exceed budgeted production tonnage and grade
  • Proper equipment operations by employees
  • Daily pre-shift meetings with maintenance and engineering departments to ensure consistent priorities
  • Provide leadership to the mine and maintenance crews
  • Work under Mining Superintendent and report to him
  • Attend supervisors' meeting and collect work information
  • Develop plans with shift bosses as per work completion
  • Lead the focus of the weekly CRM topic and follow up on non-compliance to program
  • Perform work place inspections
  • Ensure workers' safety
  • Identify work performance and quality level
  • Provide instructions and work techniques
  • Plan team's holidays and annual leaves
  • Develop plans as per work sequence
  • Coordinate work in Control room
  • Give handover reports to the next shift with sign-offs
  • Perform equipment pre-use inspections
  • Works in compliance with Oyu Tolgoi's safety rules and the Internal Responsibility System
  • Require workers to comply with the required safety rules and policy
  • Understand and comply with safety rules and policy, receive timely updates and keep team members updated
  • Participates in appropriate training and complies within the scope of their responsibilities within the Environmental Management System
  • Managing mining operations to safely meet agreed organizational performance targets for mine production within agreed budgets and timescales
  • Responsible to have a working relationship with the HR team to help solve employee issues
  • Provide the Site Manager with manpower schedules, daily, weekly and monthly reports
  • Lead a Team of Supervisors in the coordination and execution of daily mining activities, including mucking, haulage, dewatering, conveyors, skipping of rock to surface
  • Organize, prepare, perform and present information and initiatives at monthly OHS meetings
  • Conduct planned safety audits
  • Liaising with other members of the Client's management team to understand all necessary aspects and needs of the overall operation
  • Maintaining a high level of communication with mining and maintenance crews, both through supervision and directly with the work force
  • Accompany client's representatives on their weekly or monthly inspections and measurements of production
  • Over inspect the pre-use inspections and maintenance done on mobile equipment.
  • Ensure the highest standard of housekeeping e.g. ensure signs are clean and hung correctly on, barricade tags are in place and written in English and Mongolian, headings are set up as per procedure, rubbish is removed, and roadways are maintained.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

Education/Qualifications
  • The incumbent will extensive underground mining experience with a minimum of 5 years supervisory experience supported by documented leadership training e.g. Common Core
  • Attend one of the training for supervisory, Front Page on How to Investigate Incident and 5 Why Incident Investigation Training


Work Experience/Skills:
  • An in-depth understanding of underground mine development and planning; mine safety legislation and regulations; underground equipment, mining practices, policies, procedures and standards;
  • A comprehensive understanding of mine-site operations;
  • Knowledge of computer programs including standard MS office programs;
  • Proven ability to manage underground mine development and workforce;
  • Highly effective organizational skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Very strong interpersonal skills in order to develop effective internal and external relationships;
  • Proven leadership skills including the ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams;
  • Proven supervisory and management skills;
  • Effective conflict resolution skills;
  • Ability to effectively and calmly work in a team setting;
  • Ability to work independently on complex tasks and non-routine matters.
