Due to an internal transfer, Northern Star (Pogo) LLC have a challenging and rewarding opportunity for a Geology Superintendent at our world-class Pogo operation in Alaska on a rotational camp schedule.

What's the role?

The Geology Superintendent reports to the Geology Manager, and the primary role is to coordinate and supervise the teams that (i) delineate and classify in-mine mineral resources and (ii) perform the underground geological activities required to facilitate the safe, efficient and cost-effective extraction and growth of the mineral reserve within the Pogo Gold Mine area to meet or exceed Northern Star's performance requirements within the Pogo Geology Department.

Duties include:

  • The Superintendent Mine Geology together with their Mine Project Geologists are responsible for delivering the Reserve & Resource Growth as per guidance from Corporate.
  • Design and implement programs that will lead to the expansion / continuation of current operations in a cost-effective manner. Must be capable of devising these programs independently.
  • Incumbent must be able to present and promote ideas to senior management to ensure on-going exploration funding.
  • The position is accountable for the activities and performance of the underground geology team.
  • The Superintendent Mine Geology is expected to provide guidance/mentoring and assistance to the geological personnel on site
  • Development and enforcement of safe work practices.
  • Supervise the maintenance of a training matrix in each area of responsibility and hold the Senior Geologists accountable for implementing the training of their staff.
  • Regularly monitor the training requirements of your direct reports and discuss and implement training plans for them following IDP reviews or at other times as required.
  • Assist and hold the Senior Mine Geologists accountable for ensuring that the quality of the products produced is sufficient to meet or exceed Northern Star corporate and site standards.
  • Assist and hold the Senior Mine Geologists accountable for performing the end-of-month production reconciliations and for taking appropriate actions to address issues and corrective actions assigned in the monthly reconciliation meetings.
  • The Superintendent Mine Geology (with the assistance of the Mine Project Geologists) are responsible for designing and maintaining a scheduled system that ensure a detailed review of all Pogo in-mine areas for economic in-mine material in and around old workings, as well as strike and dip lode extensions to current- or untested-mine areas. (This include data reviews/analysis, target generation, drilling, modelling, concept designs/solutions for mining with basic financial analysis and ensuring incorporation into LOM schedule through interactions with Long Term Planning department.
  • Manage the onsite relationships between Northern Star and Geology contractor personnel.
  • The Superintendent Mine Geology is expected to make use of appropriate Northern Star or external experts, where appropriate, to complete studies or address issues related to contracts/training that involve expertise not present on site e.g. structural study (external), seismic surveys, software training etc.
  • The Superintendent Mine Geology is responsible for/or assist with- various Geology reporting functions and meetings: This includes Daily/Weekly/Monthly/Quarterly and Annual reports

The specifics:

  • A minimum of 10 years geological experience, the majority of which must be in gold; 7+ years in supervisory role.
  • Experience in the use of Geological Software (Leapfrog and Vulcan).
  • Good communication skills and ability to work within, and lead, a team
  • Demonstrate ability to maintain or exceed best industry practice in all geological and environmental tasks.
  • Awareness of MSHA Inspection Act & Regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, set achievable goals and safely achieve tasks is required.
  • High level of Computer literacy Microsoft Office and Vulcan software is required.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes in procedures and practices.
  • Must have good comprehension of safe operating procedures, safety rules, policies, emergency procedures, and MSHA requirements.
  • Must pass a post offer physical and drug test, as well as a background check.


The Details:

Working a 8 days on, 6 days off schedule of days and nights, up to 12 hours a day or more at a remote campsite. Extreme conditions, including but not limited to extreme and changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

Employees are required to stay on site at the company provided camp during the work rotation. Camp facilities provide dining service, games room, exercise & weight room, sauna, and accommodation rooms. Dormitory rooms have a land line phone, great Wi-Fi & cable TV. Cell service is available through Wi-Fi. The Company provides a bus service to and from Fairbanks, Delta Junction and Tok, Alaska.
