We are looking for a Senior Advisor Government Relations to help communicate Rio Tinto's and Rio Tinto Kennecott's message to our stakeholders and local governments. The role will work to protect and enhance the reputation of Rio Tinto by building mutually beneficial relationships with local governments, regulators, neighboring communities, special interest groups, and our business partners.

The primary purpose of this role is to support local government engagement efforts for Rio Tinto Kennecott and supporting of governmental relationships across our U.S. operations and projects.

Additional aspects of this role are to collaborate across Rio Tinto Kennecott, Rio Tinto Copper and Diamonds, and the US Corporate Relations hub to ensure stakeholder engagement, government relations, community relations, and communication strategies are aligned with business objectives.

This role will report to the Director of Government Relations and work closely with the mining operations to provide external guidance and recommendations to various groups across the value stream. stakeholders. Other responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Lead outreach with local neighboring municipalities on future projects and operations that impact applicable communities.
  • Maintain bill tracking lists for the state of Utah and Arizona.
  • Maintain risk registers for Government Relations to support Investment Committee, internal projects, etc.
  • Support development and implement of stakeholder mapping, tracking, and engagement strategies to reach key stakeholders.
  • Support stakeholder engagement with local and state government officials.
  • Coordinate with internal environmental team and formulate appropriate regulator interaction.
  • Represent Rio Tinto at City Council, County Council and other local level public meetings consistently and as necessary.
  • Support Director of Government Relations for stakeholder engagement with community and local government officials.

What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team (standard for all job adverts)
  • A Bachelor's Degree in relevant discipline
  • 6-10 years of experience in external relations or related fields.
  • 5+ years of proven leadership experience.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated ability to implement and manage multiple stakeholder projects.
  • Ability to work in multi-functional and multi-disciplinary teams and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Effective and proven communication skills.
  • Self-starter, ability to diagnose the business or government need, and take steps to lead project/process to completion.

Where you'll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
