Bald Mountain is an open-pit mine with a large estimated mineral resource base located in White Pine County, Nevada. Its workforce comes from Ely, Eureka, Elko, and Spring Creek area. It is the newest mine in Kinross' portfolio acquired in January 2016. Nevada is one of the best mining jurisdictions in the world, along the southern extension of the prolific Carlin trend. The Bald Mountain Vantage Complex Project has commenced production, and the first gold bar was poured in June 2019.

Job Summary

Responsible for carrying out a full range of surveying functions associated with mine operations, including blast hole pattern layout, weekly and month-end dig advance survey, maps and volumes, updating month-end topography maps, designing road alignments and dump configurations with volumetrics, and drone operations. Requires direct involvement with engineering and surveying staff. Employee must also fill in for surveyor as needed and show willingness to learn application of engineering principles.

Essential Functions

  • Knows all aspects of survey tasks.
  • Capable of setting up a Trimble GPS base station and making a site calibration to be used with a local coordinate system.
  • Coordinate month-end surveying pit features and stockpiles and tabulate volumes.
  • Update the mine site topography maps to monthly surveys of pit, roads, stockpiles and waste dump advancement.
  • Capable of training all survey levels including survey technician I, II, III, senior tech, and summer interns.
  • Demonstrate use of Blast Pattern design for the generation of drill maps and drill reports.
  • Generate road alignments and dump designs in plan/section view, including volumetrics.
  • Enter surveying, drilling and engineering data in information system.
  • Ordering and maintaining up to date equipment and supplies for the department.
  • Proficient with math, including coordinate calculations, triangulations, resections, traverses, volumes, etc.
  • Meet or exceed established performance expectations set by management.

  • Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the state.
  • 8-10 years as a mine surveyor or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 2-5 years supervisory experience preferred.
  • FAA Part 107 Drone operating license preferred. Must be capable and willing to obtain within 3 months.
  • Knowledge of Trimble GPS Equipment and Total Stations is preferred.
  • Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions required.
  • Thorough knowledge of surveying operations, procedures, and equipment.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Must have the ability to read and write instructions, perform mathematical calculations, and keep accurate records.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of mining equipment and computer programs used by the company.
  • Working knowledge of Vulcan, Point Studio, and Trimble Business Center is preferred, Microsoft Word and Excel is required.
  • Must have strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and be able to read, generate, and understand maps and printouts.
  • Ability to work with others in a team environment.
  • Ability and desire to learn and adapt quickly to unexpected mine plan changes or environmental changes.
