Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa. Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering modern leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The Role:

  • Reporting to the Geotechnical Superintendent and working with the team, establish and implement the Geotechnical standards and procedures for the Tanami Operations;
  • Provides geotechnical input to all functions within Technical Services, Geology and Operations on site;
  • Oversees the geotechnical aspects of all the TE2 project execution;
  • Manage both the operational and TE2 geotechnical resources;
  • Works with the engineers and operational personnel to implement and maintain the Ground Control Management Plan, Ground Support Standards, Data Collection, QA/QC and Ground Monitoring systems;
  • Supervises and leads the Geotechnical Engineers, Technicians and Graduates, with a strong emphasis on providing mentoring and develop team members;
  • Is responsible for the technical integrity of the designed mine ground support system and the ground control management plans;
  • Actively participates in mine planning activities;
  • Prepares reports and maintain records as required;
  • Build positive relationships and work closely with all stakeholders;
  • Provides Geotechnical input into the Business Plan and approves short to medium term plans.


The Person:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Science, Engineering or Geology with geo-mechanical subjects or a geotechnical upgrade to the degree;
  • Strong knowledge of Mine 2-4D, Vulcan and/or Deswik, Dips, Unwedge, Phases and Map 3D software;
  • At least 7 years geotechnical related experience;
  • A minimum of 6 years' experience in underground mining, predominantly in geotechnical engineering and preferably including some operational experience; and
  • Demonstrated experience leading a team.
