Purpose

The Drill & Blast Engineer will be well-rounded in open pit mine design and operations. The Drill & Blast Engineer will be responsible for the design and monitoring of efficient and safe mining practices involving drilling & blasting in operations and technical services.

Safety & Sustainability Expectations:
  • Become familiar with all aspects of Fatality Risk Management.
  • Be proactive with respect to safety and help design and operate a site that is the safest possible, through input and thoughts shared with others.
  • Conform to the critical control verification process on site.
  • Identify substandard conditions and practices during pit tours and take appropriate corrective action.


Essential Duties

Promoting Safety and Sustainability:
  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement in safety by reviewing existing engineering drill and blast designs and implementing new designs.
  • Develop plans and designs for regulatory compliance and compliance to Company policies, procedures and standards.
  • Promote and adhere to Company health, safety and environmental policies


Drill and Blast Management:
  • Responsible for pursuing continuous improvement of established drill and blast practices on-site by optimizing drill patterns, exploring new explosive options, monitoring and reinforcing drill and blast QAQC.
  • Review parameters for controlling for blast vibration and overpressure. Review blast quality and follow up on community feedback. Development and review of Drill & Blast pattern designs and weekly schedules in collaboration with Mine Operations team, Short Term Planning team, Geotech team, Voids team, and Ore Control team.
  • Development and review of shot timing designs in collaboration with Mine Operations team, while maintaining focus on blasting impacts to the surrounding community.
  • Responsible for communication of drill and blast layouts to customers and stakeholders, including Mine Operations, Geology, Voids, Short Term Planning, and Sustainability & External Relations.
  • Responsible for maintaining Blast Tracking Database with the view of using data to inform improvement practices.
  • Identify and track key performance indicators to drive improvement of fragmentation, dilution performance, highwall compliance, bench grade compliance, and overall blast pattern performance.


Leadership Requirements:
  • Interacts with department heads, mine operations staff, technical services staff, contractors and other company personnel as required
  • Requires good communication skills in order to align Operations and Technical Services personnel on drilling, blasting, planning and scheduling issues.


Training & Experience

  • Degree in Mine Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Prior Mine Engineering experience required, preferably with strong drill and blast optimization exposure
    • 102 - 2-4 Years Experience
    • 103 - 5-7 Years Experience
    • 104 - 7+ Years Experience
  • Previous leadership role would be an asset, not requirement
  • Moderate to Advanced skills in Minesight and AutoCAD. Ability to visualize and work in 3-D
  • Ability to organize workloads and modify priorities in a dynamic fast-paced continuous production environment
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

  • Judgment & Business Savvy


Working Conditions

  • The Cripple Creek & Victor (CC&V) Mine site is located at elevations ranging from approximately 9,400 ft. to 10,600 ft. above sea level. Workers in this position are routinely exposed to conditions at various work sites throughout this range of elevations and must be physically capable of working at this altitude.
  • Weather conditions can and do change frequently, and can become severe at times.
  • Ability to complete work tasks while exposed to weather conditions / elevation.


This position has several levels (pay grades 102, 103, and 104) dependent upon job-related education, training and experience. The salary offered for this overtime-exempt position will depend on the level, but the anticipated salary range for this position will be $66,000 - 109,700. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The specific level and corresponding salary that will be offered to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate's wage rate history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about wage rate history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance.
