About the role
Our new Commercial Services & Digital team will streamline and guide how we invest in and harness technology for Commercial. This team will modernise and digitise our manual processes, addressing pain points for employees and focus on initiatives for improving customer experiences. We see Commercial Services as the engine room with their focus on post deal tasks such as invoicing, trade finance, shipping and laytime. Commercial Services & Digital is a unique opportunity to bring digital closer to the business, to create more synergies between teams and bring together business improvements to achieve business excellence.

We're looking for an experienced Solutions Architect to embed within a high-performing engineering team to help build the deal capture, valuation and reporting tools powering the integrated trading business at Rio Tinto. Our Solution Architects play a critical part in the end-to-end market facing capability of the Commercial organization by connecting the dots across the trading landscape and leading the technical design decisions across the engineering team.

The team does this by using modern techniques, tooling and behaviours to deliver software as quickly as possible. You'll build on the culture, values and engineering principles that has made the team successful, reinforcing the speed and agility achieved thus far by taking a principled approach in software design. You'll be asked to learn new things quickly and accomplish a wide range of tasks, all focused on designing technology solutions covering transactional activity, market risk and credit risk analysis.

Reporting to the General Manager Commercial Services & Digital, you will be:

  • Understands business functions and transform requirements into architecture and blueprint for the solution being created to meet the business outcomes and IT objectives
  • Lead architecture design and development, testing, and deployment of scalable solutions.
  • Create working skeleton or prototype for architectural components
  • Work with product managers and analysts to define technical requirements and implementation strategies across Rio Tinto's trading landscape
  • Provide technology perspective to business to achieve roadmap and prioritization by keeping abreast with industry trends. Where required, help business size the complexity of problem and help simplify and define MVP
  • Ensure best practices, frameworks and re-useable components are employed in the development project
  • Interface with the formal IT organization to drive collaboration where necessarily, especially in integration with enterprise systems and relevant compliance requirements
  • Partner with the front and middle office where necessarily to describe and implement best practice in commodities trading
  • Be a single point contact for any escalation pertaining to solution architecture and design
What you will need for the role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Around 15 years relevant experience as an architect or software engineer in a trading environment
  • Ability to implement models in Python, R, VBA/Excel, Matlab or other technical computing language to demonstrate or articulate requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to work both with senior business stakeholders as well as software engineers, translating requirements and fostering a culture of product delivery
  • Demonstrated ability to piece together an application landscape across a complex business process, design technical solutions from scratch and usher through to deployment
  • Professional experience working with risk concepts such as VaR, volatility surfaces, non-linear product valuation, potential future exposure, Monte Carlo simulation and the like
  • Good understanding of a wide variety of linear and non-linear financial instruments and markets including futures, vanilla options, swaps, forwards, exotics and structured products
  • Good understanding of cloud native architectures and design, specifically AWS services such as S3, Lambda, EC2, RDS (Postgres), API Gateway and Fargate
  • Excitement about trading and financial markets and motivated to learn and explore

It would also be beneficial if you have:
  • Advanced knowledge and coding abilities in Python and other lower level languages (e.g. C++)
  • Experience using SQL to query and manipulate large data sets
