About the role

We are looking for a dynamic leader who will be responsible for the Projects & Engineering Shutdown/Turnaround program at the Rio Tinto Kennecott Smelter. The role is responsible for leading a team of dedicated project engineers, construction coordinators, and external contractors in the successful development and delivery of engineering projects. We need you to motivate, inspire and keep your people safe and well.

Reporting to the Manager Engineer & Projects Metals and working in a challenging and exciting environment, you will:
  • Be an active proponent to embed and support the safety programs for taking care of the safety & well-being of team members
  • Be part of a dynamic and high performing team, executing large and complex industrial shutdowns/turnarounds
  • Lead your team of engineers and project management professionals in taking multiple projects through the complete project lifecycle from order of magnitude study to project execution and closure for the typically three-year Smelter shutdown cycle.
  • Work closely with multiple program stakeholders at all levels within and outside the organization to support a culture of collaboration, participation and improvement
  • Engage with key stakeholders to develop strategic project planning, capital allocation and prioritization to present the program to senior leadership for approval
  • Manage program scope, schedule, cost, and quality, and prepare reports for senior leadership
  • Have experience in industrial shutdown/turnaround management
  • Conceive and implement solutions to lessons learned from past shutdowns
  • Support quality and engineering audits for compliance with Rio Tinto project engineering guidance and standards
  • Actively support the engineering, operational readiness, construction, and commissioning scope delivery
  • Support the engagement of team members through active development planning
  • Lead the support of Rio Tinto's company values within your team



What you'll bring
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 10+ years industrial experience with experience in managing large capital projects
  • 5+ years' experience with shutdowns/turnarounds
  • 5+ years of proven leadership experience in a managerial role with demonstrated ability to effectively manage scope, schedule, and cost.
  • 5+ years of demonstrated ability to implement and manage continuous improvement processes
  • 5+ years of team building and management experience with contractor management
  • PMP or PgMP experience preferred
  • Ability to work in multi-functional and multi-disciplinary teams and deliver measurable outcomes
  • Experience creating and sustaining a safety culture, including process safety and critical risk management
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of the organization
