Aboriginal Health Specialist

Work Location: Port Hedland

Roster: 4D/3R - Residential or FIFO ex Perth

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join the Hedland VTEC Operations Team. The successful candidate will contribute to the sustainable development of Fortescue's Vocational Training and Employment Centre (VTEC) program, while providing a culturally safe working environment and supporting potential and current employees to overcome health related challenges that are preventing them from meeting health and wellbeing requirements of their roles.

Reporting to the VTEC Operations Superintendent, the Aboriginal Health Coordinator will work with Community-based organisations and service providers to facilitate connection and engagement with Fortescue's VTEC participants and employees and actively case managing the progress of these processes to meet the relevant health and wellbeing requirements for their roles. The Aboriginal Health Coordinator will apply their excellent interpersonal skills to proactively work with participants of the program, leaders, Aboriginal employees, and other external stakeholders.

Key accountabilities will include:

  • Continuous commitment to improving and maintaining the team's credibility and upholding Fortescue's commitment to Health & Safety.
  • Experience in effectively working with local Pilbara Aboriginal Communities and Language Groups.
  • Sound knowledge of local Pilbara Aboriginal Ways of Working, Networks, and connections.
  • Ability to understand and navigate complex Community relationships and dynamics.
  • Carrying out physical, mental, and social & emotional wellbeing screening for VTEC applicants and participants.
  • Case management of VTEC applicants and trainees to help them overcome physical and mental health and wellbeing challenges.
  • The ability to facilitate confidential and sensitive discussions with potential and current employees in a professional and culturally appropriate way.
  • Active participation in the designing of content for the Fortescue VTEC Pre-Employment Training Program, relating to physical, mental, and social & emotional wellbeing.
  • Case management support to Aboriginal employees living in Pilbara who require Fitness for Work or Return to Work processes (working closely with Fortescue People and Health and Safety team)
  • Overall monitoring and progress of Fortescue's Aboriginal Health Program
  • Contribution to the ongoing development and delivery of a quality and effective pre-employment training program.
  • Collaboratively work with Site Teams to deliver effective programs across the operations, including the ability to undertake site travel on a regular basis.
  • Actively engaging with Community-based organisations and service providers to ensure strong and collaborative relationships to support Fortescue employees and potential employees.
  • Contribute to the development of effective strategies to improve Aboriginal workforce resilience and reliability, and commitment to improving the effectiveness of our Aboriginal Development VTEC program.
  • Maintain clear and concise records.

Qualifications and skills required:

  • Demonstrated commitment to Safety.
  • It is considered highly desirable to hold an applicable Health qualification. Qualifications and significant experience in Community Services, Social Work, or Community Management will also be highly regarded.
  • Extensive experience in working in Aboriginal Communities.
  • WA Class C Driver's Licence - prerequisite.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Aboriginal issues and factors relating to physical, mental, and social & emotional wellbeing.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to case manage multiple individuals simultaneously.
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Demonstrated leadership capability and ability to work autonomously.
  • Experience working with vulnerable Aboriginal people is an essential requirement of this role.
