About the role

We are looking for a Senior Manager/ Senior Counsel - Global Trade to helps us lead the Company's trade compliance program, setting the strategic priorities and advising on trade compliance and export controls issues globally. The role will be responsible for ensuring that the import and export of products comply with applicable laws and regulations, including tariff classification, country of origin, customs valuation, free trade agreements, antidumping and countervailing duties and other tariffs, export controls, and licensing requirements. The primary focus of the customs-related work will be USA and Canada, but will also include other parts of the world where Rio Tinto has operations, such as Australia.

The Senior Manager/ Senior Counsel will be working in a collaborative environment and will:
  • Advise on trade agreements/export controls globally, including on relevant controls;
  • Maintain and evaluate compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including overseeing risk assessments to identify compliance gaps and supervising implementation corrective actions and procedures;
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for inquiries from relevant government agencies;
  • Maintain expertise of current import and export laws and regulations affecting the Company and communicates to business leadership any changes that affect the Company;
  • Ensure proper records are maintained consistent with applicable laws and regulations;
  • Advise on the proper customs valuation of imported merchandise, including oversight of annual U.S. customs reconciliations;
  • Manage customs broker and trade-related consultant engagements;
  • Act as an initial escalation point for daily trade-related operational challenges; and
  • Liaise with and coordinate internal departments/stakeholders, including Sales & Marketing, Logistics, Legal, Corporate Affairs, Tax and Compliance, in connection with trade-related issues and initiatives.

What you'll bring

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • Experience with global trade management software and systems
  • Expert knowledge of applicable import and export control laws and regulations is a MUST
  • Experience with audits and disclosure practices
  • S. Customs broker license a plus
  • Experience in project management a plus
  • Experience with international customs compliance a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Preferably the candidate will have a U.S. law degree with relevant experience advising on (a) trade agreements/export controls and (b) customs compliance, and undertaking customs projects
  • 8+ years relevant experience
