Reporting to the Lead, Regional Water Monitoring, Surface Water, the Environmental Technician is responsible for supporting ongoing monitoring and compliance for our regional and site-specific surface water monitoring programs. This temporary contract will be for approximately 10 months.

We are looking for someone with the ability to stay organized and thrive in a fast-paced, team environment. An individual with strong analytical and decision-making abilities and the capacity for practical problem solving. The successful candidate will possess broad scientific knowledge, technical skills, and environmental project management experience.

Responsibilities :
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Conduct and supervise surface water sampling and monitoring programs to confirm regulatory compliance and support the implementation of the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan
  • Carry out environmental data entry and review; manage information in EQuIS database and GIS; and use data to draft technical reports and communications
  • Lead the regional hydrometric monitoring program
  • Lead the bathymetric monitoring program for coal mine sites
  • Participate in groundwater investigations (drilling and sampling), inspections, and audits
  • Provide technical review for surface water monitoring and hydrology reports
  • Provide technical, administrative, and project management support, as well as contractor supervision
  • Adhere to environmental procedures and standardized protocols, follow-up with laboratories, and maintain quality control and assurance


Qualifications :
  • Diploma or Degree in Environmental Studies, Earth Sciences (Biology, Geography, Geology, Forestry), Water Resources Engineering or Natural Resource field
  • Minimum two years of experience in environmental compliance, surface water monitoring/sampling or hydrology
  • Experience in evaluating surface water quality data and preparing technical reports
  • Experience with environmental data management software (GIS, EQuIS) and proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite®
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental and waste legislation, standards, permits, and effective industry practices
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently with nominal supervision in outdoor remote locations, and inclement weather conditions
