New Afton Mine

Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.

Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. About the Role

Schedule: Shift 5/2, Monday - Friday

Position Reports To: Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Position Overview
As an integral part of New Afton’s technical services team, the Geotechnical Instrumentation Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, and assisting with the designs for all the underground instrumentation systems. The automated instrumentation systems involve Strain Extensometers (MPBX), Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR and Optical TDR), Seismic System, Elexon Smart Markers (Geo4Sight) and Elexon Detectors and Beacons.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain the instrumentation network health for the current levels.
  • Compiling the data for the engineering working groups.
  • Maintaining instrumentation databases.
  • Working with wireless and automated instrumentation systems. Reducing the manual reading requirements.
  • Hands on installation of the underground block cave monitoring instrumentation programs for upcoming levels.
  • Connections to instrumentation, electrical experience.
  • Planning diamond drill programs with the mine operations team, IT department and Electrical.
  • Following budget plans for new instrumentation projects.


Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Engineering Degree, Engineering Technologist or Technician Diploma;
  • 2 Years of experience with geotechnical or relevant instrumentation systems;
  • Experience with instrumentation readings, troubleshooting and QA/QC;
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills in working with multiple departments, contractors/consultants.


Preference will be given to those candidates who possess:

  • Mining or tunneling experience.
  • Experience with 3D mining software eg. Vulcan, MineSight, or Deswik;
  • Experience planning drill programs & managing drilling contractors.


Other Requirements

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:
  • Successful completion of pre-placement functional screen
  • Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada
  • Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements


Compensation

A competitive salary, performance bonus plan and benefits will be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
