Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.

The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role

Schedule: 5/2 and 4/3 – 9 hour days

Position Reports To: General Manager

Position Overview

The Mine Manager Responsible for effective, planned, and economic extraction of ore and waste including optimizing grade in Open pit and Underground Mining Operations. To safely and strategically direct and manage all mine operations and maintenance activities including organizing, planning, budgeting, staffing, cost containment and increase profitability. To analyze geological & engineering information and provide direction in safely mining to plan, emphasizing the need to sustain economic mine operations and increase the profitability and Life of Mine. To work with the senior management team in determining the overall strategy for the mine.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee and implement mine operations to maximize production, improve productivity, optimize resources and costs
  • Develop and execute overall strategy for mine operations and development based on LOM plans, and inputs from other functional departments and experts.
  • Meet or exceed the mine budget and production targets in terms of feed grade, material mined, stockpile and ore delivery to the process plant in accordance with the annual plan and budget.
  • Deliver ROM tonnes, waste stripping and grades as in accordance with the annual plan and budget.
  • Ensure maximum productivity and extraction rates by optimizing mining methods, procedures & equipment and ensure that the assets are being optimally operated as per the mine plan.
  • Review data, plans, survey reports, geological data and co-ordinate with technical services and maintenance to achieve or exceed planned extractions rates and planned mine development.
  • Optimize personnel, equipment’s, and assets to achieve designed capacities, including assisting in planning/scheduling, inventory management and contractors.
  • Responsible for technical compliance and requirements within the Mine plan, working within internal systems and in support with the Engineering team, ensure adherence to established technical and operational standards and regulatory compliances.
  • Effectively manage, control, and optimize OPEX and CAPEX in accordance with approved plans.
  • Accountable for ensuring that safe working conditions are maintained throughout the mine including equipment, roadways, benches, blast patterns, berms, and high walls.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of mining laws and safety regulations, and issue directives to direct reports to ensure adherence to applicable rules and regulations.
  • Prepare economically viable overall mine budget and business plan targets in accordance with Life of Mine Plan.
  • Track and monitor performance and take corrective actions to achieve or exceed planned performance targets.
  • Actively manage contractor relationships to optimize performance, reliability, and cost.
  • Recommend relevant benchmarks and continually identify the best practice and initiate improvement measures to achieve and exceed them.
  • Responsible and provide support as required in accordance with established frameworks for all Mine Operations projects and ensure projects are monitored, reported, reviewed and delivered in accordance with agreed framework.
  • Ensuring compliance of risk policies, procedures, protocols, and standards, applying the relevant risk policy frameworks, aimed at minimizing operational, business and environmental risks and ensuring that there are effective and standard process to manage risk.
  • Optimize and ensure sufficient ore stockpiles are maintained.
  • Ensure proper water diversions and dewatering systems are in place as per plan and/or objectives and are appropriately maintained.
  • Responsible for continually improve the performance of blasting operations.


Strategic direction to Mine Maintenance department
  • Responsible for overall optimization of equipment performance and reduction in unit maintenance cost.
  • Optimize maintenance planning, scheduling, and execution, in accordance with internal systems and guidelines, to ensure minimized disruption of production.
  • Assist to ensure that equipment is in good working order and that maintenance procedures are followed to ensure safe and reliable operation of all mobile equipment and ensure or exceed budgeted availability and OEE.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and upkeep of the Maintenance Planning System towards achieving world class and industry standards in maintenance management practices.
  • Support maintenance personnel are adequately trained, equipped, and motivated to accomplish maintenance programs in a safe, timely, and cost-effective manner.
  • Assist to develops strategy for the maintenance function and ensures maintenance plans are executed in order to meet or exceed Operational targets.


Act as a member of the senior management team to develop and achieve the overall strategy and goals of the mine
  • Provide Strategic support and advice to the management team.
  • Contribute to the management team to set the direction and establish the mid- to long-term operations and project development plans for the mine production and maintenance departments.
  • Responsible and provide advice to the management team regarding the development and implementation of the overall mine budget.
  • Act as the expert within the site on mine Operation and maintenance processes and practices.
  • Identify options and implement actions to adopt best practices for mine Operation and maintenance functions for sustained continuous improvement.


Provide leadership to the team
  • Develop sound professional relationships with other department heads, incorporating a true “team spirit” with mutual support to meet business objectives.
  • Maintain an organizational focus on strategic goals.
  • Ensure that an appropriate team structure is in place to deliver optimal performance in the mine and maintenance by building a strong team.
  • Provide clear work objectives and expectations of the performance levels required to achieve business plans and production targets.
  • Ensure that training is provided in accordance with the current and future requirements of the mine.
  • Ensure the required manpower and equipment are in place to achieve planned production, while meeting planned costs.
  • Manage performance by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, and providing feedback and coaching to direct reports.
  • Assist HR to settle grievances where required.
  • Promote and maintain a high-performance culture.


Qualifications
  • University degree in Mining Engineering.
  • Related professional designation or certification
  • Six Sigma or other relevant Continuous Improvement certification would be an added advantage.
  • Minimum 10-15 years of experience in metal mine operations, preferably open-pit & Underground gold or in precious metals. Proven track record in managing and directing profitable mining Operations.
  • Excellent management, leadership and inter-personal skills with solid open pit technical background and experience across the sector.
  • Team working approach to challenges and opportunities with well-developed planning and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with an ability to impact and influence management and workforce including technical report writing and public presentations.
  • Enthusiastic and creative approach to problem-solving with knowledge of Mine planning software’s.
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of the applicable legislation and regulations for Mines in Canada.
  • Ability to interpret engineering plans and offer sound technical expertise with regards to mine design and ground control issues.
  • High degree of business acumen integrity in all matters.
  • Change Leadership – Use business and industry knowledge to predict the need for change. Proactively manage changes. Ability to anticipate resistance to change and develop plans to overcome it.
