The Role

We are seeking a Senior Specialist - Operations Support in Power and Utilities to work at the Lihir Gold Limited operation in Papua New Guinea and reside residentially at Lihir. Reporting to Superintendent of Power and Utilities, you will be actively involved, as the key person and leader to oversee and provide the relevant support required to coordinate and manage Production Loads, Production Steam demands, and Power Generation requirements across the site. You will work closely with P&U Superintendents and Major Equipment Maintenance Contract Company on day-to-day breakdowns and planned maintenance associated with site power generating equipment.

Power Generation and Control Rooms on the Newcrest Mining Site and Lihir Island includes
  • GEO Geothermal Power Plant 5 off Steam Turbines
  • IPS Interim Power Station (8 off Gen-Sets, the Barge) plus two off land-based Cubes, all controlled from the IPS Control Room located on the Barge
  • Diesel Power Station all Gen-Sets (seven off) are controlled from the GEO Control Room.

Additional duties will cover a across Operations, People Management, Production, Cost, technical and behavioural some of which include but are not limited too:
  • Nurturing a positive and supportive team relationship with our P&U Maintenance Coordinator along with the Mechanical & Electrical Teams.
  • Facilitate and provide continuous, ongoing coaching and upskilling on operational utility equipment (Boilers, Air Compressors, Separators, Lube Oil Filter Units) for Coordinators, Supervisors and Operations Staff operator and Power Generating equipment.
  • Maintaining effective and up to date communication with, and between Management, P&U Superintendents, Major Equipment Maintenance Contract Company (Wartsila) in line with the Wartsila Scope - Lihir Agreement, the Process Plants and Power Plants, as required.
  • Initiate plans, in conjunction with key stakeholders, to maximize the efficiency of generated electricity to meet the site power system demand including ancillary services.
  • Analytical skills for fault finding / diagnosis in process (steam & power generation) and controls
  • Proficient in reading process drawings and interpreting deficiencies in process flow
  • To ensure that you are the HUB of the P&U Operational Team and that all staff are being supported and provided with clear direction and instruction as required.
  • To ensure that all Operational Staff understand the requirements of their job / role, and that Operational Staff are carrying out their job / role and the requirements of the position / title they hold, in an efficient and safe manner, in line with the Newcrest Mining instruction and guidelines.
  • To maintain and be vigilant of the requirement for Operations Staff to carry out and provide written evidence of day / night shift required checks of specific equipment such as Boiler Logbooks and Inspections (as required by the MRA).
  • Develop a strong and committed attitude to safety across the Operations Team of Power and Utilities, in line with Newcrest Mining behaviours and directives.
  • Develop a committed attitude and understanding to working with High-Risk Tasks (such as Working at Heights and Confined Space Entry) and insure that, where required P&U Operations Staff are trained and have the required VOC (Verification of Competency) in relation to carrying out their daily, maintenance and shutdown activities.
  • Facilitate Business improvement ideas and approved initiatives across all areas of P&U Operations and involve P&U Operations staff, including Superintendents, Safety Officers and Management.
  • To ensure that all morning meetings in other areas of P&U Operations (for example at IPS and DPS) are being held and actively attended by Operational Staff including PTW writers / officers and members from the Dewatering Group.
  • To work closely with Shutdown and Maintenance Planners, understand the requirements and need for dedicated equipment and timing constraints associated with the nominated shutdown works and work schedules.
  • Actively seek cost reduction opportunities and identify & report any cost wastage within designated areas.
  • Operate equipment efficiently thus reducing cost and increase productivity.
  • Efficiently manage Rosters and manning hours, resources to reduce waste and increase utilization to full capacity.
  • To value add to the P&U Department by becoming an active and supportive participant / member of the Newcrest Mining Lihir Site "Opinion Leaders Group"
  • To be the P&U Operations representative and Marshal for all ERT Fire and or Rescue Drills. These Drills are carried out on a regular basis at the following P&U Areas, GEO, IPS and DPS. There is an important and specific need to report the outcomes and instances of such Drills back to the P&U Operations Superintendent and to inform all staff of the outcome of the ERT Fire and or Rescue Drills.
  • Uphold and continue the ongoing important focus of Safety (KPI's, Chess Actions & 274 Inspections), production (SAOC), and operational requirements within the P&U Operations Team.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
  • 3 - 6 years relevant work experience at this level ideally in process, operational, mechanical, or electrical discipline.
  • Boiler License / Competency or Certificate.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification advantageous.
  • Trade or Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical discipline is essential.
  • Good understanding of basic tasks in a large-scale mining/mineral processing plant, maintaining schedules.
  • Advance use of various company & departmental systems including SAP, PI or optimum
  • Computer proficiency in MS office
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work autonomously (from time to time) and make good well considered decisions.
  • Certificate in PNG power plant operation or technician
  • PNG National Drivers license
  • Certificate in Workplace assessment and training or similar attributes is desirable
  • Relevant tertiary qualification advantageous.

Mobilisation Requirements:
  • This position is offered on a residential basis at Lihir in Papua New Guinea
  • Ability to provide/obtain valid police clearance
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment
