Teck is looking for a highly motivated, collaborative and commercially adept Senior Geologist to deliver success in a greenfields discovery role, based in Perth, Australia. This role will report to the Manager, Exploration – Australia, with a matrix reporting line to the Director, Global Evaluations, and is responsible for the capture of new, high quality projects within Australia, Asia-Pacific and Africa by identifying, analyzing and actioning third-party farm-in, acquisition, and investment opportunities. The role will also work closely with existing subject matter experts and internal project generation geologists to upgrade Teck’s discovery portfolio in the region.

We are seeking a dynamic, experienced exploration professional with strong technical and commercial skills in ore deposit geology, mineral system thinking, and exploration targeting, having a results-driven record in project acquisition and portfolio upgrade. A proven ability to assess and integrate third party and precompetitive technical and commercial datasets, coordinate resources, evaluate risk and make conclusive recommendations is highly desirable. Specific exploration experience and expertise in Porphyry Copper and/or Sediment-Hosted base metals systems is required.

About the Role:
  • Lead opportunity evaluation and acquisition from various sources (e.g third party submittals, project generation activities) at all stages of the exploration value chain throughout Australia, Asia-Pacific and Africa.
  • Compile, integrate, interpret, and assess geoscientific and commercial datasets to make acquisition recommendations to the Exploration management team.
  • Collaborate with the Director – Global Evaluations, Regional Chief Geoscientist – Europe & Australasia and other geoscience teams to align project generation and evaluation opportunity identification and capture.
  • Collaborate with project generation teams to identify new discovery opportunities for management consideration.
  • Stay abreast of technical research into relevant geoscience and ore deposit studies and integrate key learnings into project appraisals.
  • Maintain a broad national network of industry, government and academic contacts to gain technical and commercial intelligence to assist in the capture of new opportunities in a timely manner.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and innovation across all constituents and partners and encourage cooperation and open communication.
  • Contribute to internal team technical development via formal and informal communication, training and knowledge sharing.
  • Promote and incorporate the company’s commitment to health and safety, sustainability, the environment, and ensure Teck’s standards are met in the region.


About You:
  • A minimum of 12 years of geoscience experience, including significant experience in project generation.
  • A university degree in geoscience or a related field is required. A relevant, advanced degree (MSc or PhD) is preferred.
  • Proven track record of both early stage to development stage project evaluations, including strong understanding of resource evaluation, economic modeling and commercial concepts.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of business priorities, visualizes future potential opportunities, anticipates risks.
  • Demonstrated experience of effectively leading and collaborating with teams as well as driving change.
  • Results oriented with excellent organizational, planning, self-management and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation and interpersonal skills and experience working with a broad range of people.
  • Extensive experience in working on Porphyry Copper and/or Sediment Hosted base metal systems.
  • Familiarity with Australia, Asian and African geology is considered an asset.
  • Advanced written and oral English language skills is required.
  • Ability to travel within the region as required.
