The Role

We are seeking a Principal - Talent, Learning & Technical Training. The role will lead and implement the Strategy for Learning & Talent, High Risk Competency Training, Technical Training and Compliance Training for Lihir to ensure regulatory, social obligation, safety, operational and requisite company training is achieved as manded by the Lihir People Plan and the Lihir 0-1-20 vision. The role is mandated to set Lihir as the best people training and development mine site in PNG. The successful candidate will be a mature management professional with a broad range of experience in a similar role, outstanding leadership skills and a proven ability to effect change in a challenging and diverse environment.

Reporting to the Human Resource Manager and with a number of direct reports you will oversee a large and varied contractor workforce.

You will be responsible for:

  • Being the champion for people capability build, talent identification, talent succession planning and will seek continuous improvement in the upskilling of people in the business and as part of our social obligation
  • Lead and champion diversity and inclusion initiative alignment
  • Developing & implementing mid to long-term departmental plans, changes and initiatives to achieve overall business goals by providing positive leadership, direction & guidance within the department and wider organization
  • Reviewing departmental financial data & results to assess performance and identify opportunities for maximising results, reducing risk and implementing cost management initiatives
  • Continually seek to understand key market drivers and emerging trends
  • Deliver statutory training in key areas having knowledge of the PNG Mining Act, Environmental Act, and PNG Labour laws
  • Active participant in meeting with key internal and external stakeholders in PNG's resource sectors
  • Manage the training and development programs for local Lihirians and New Irelanders as well as create partnerships schools and other education bodies
  • Manage the Young Talent and Graduate Programs including industrial training
  • Acting HR Manager periodically

Qualifications Skills & Experience
  • Bachelors degree in Human Resources, Education (Tertiary or Vocational) or other relevant tertiary-level qualification essential
  • Relevant Qualification in Training & Assessment essential
  • Relevant post graduate qualification desirable
  • Accreditation from PNG or Relevant Training Council desirable
  • Accreditation from relevant Human Resources Institute desirable
  • 10+ years relevant work experience essential.
  • Thorough understanding of PNG employment law and related legislation desirable
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Excellent verbal, written communication and public speaking skills
  • Functional knowledge of SAP
  • Functional knowledge of Learning Management Systems
  • Proficient understanding of adult learning theory principles, practices and methodology
  • Proficient understanding of learning & development
  • Proficient understanding of technical training
  • High capability of applying technology in learning
  • Broad skillset having worked in two to three of the functional areas of Human Resources
  • Excellent understanding of the HR value chain

Mobilisation Requirements:
  • Must be willing to reside residentially on Lihir
  • Ability to provide/obtain valid police clearance
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment medical assessment
