Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Senior Civil Engineer to join the Infrastructure group in our Tunnels and Underground Infrastructure team based out of Hatch’s technical excellence center in Mississauga where, among other notable achievements, the first segmental tunnel linings used in North America were designed for the Toronto Transit Commission.

Our knowledge of infrastructure includes aviation, highways and bridges, planning and advisory services, ports, rail and transit, tunnels, and water. Want to be part of the creation and construction of our cities? Then the infrastructure team is for you!

You will be required to work within our integrated team where daily tasks include carrying out feasibility assessments, option development, various level of design, constructability and risk assessments. Your work will focus on general civil design components including construction site layout, coordination with municipalities, approval agencies and other stakeholders, utilities engineering and coordination with utility owners, property impact identification, traffic impact assessment, and various levels of design depending upon project requirements.

As the successful candidate, you will:
  • Lead our civil design group, in the preparation of site development designs for tunnel and underground infrastructure projects including drawings and specifications for utility construction and relocation, traffic maintenance, site removals, construction staging, infrastructure alignment (plan and profile), property impact, site grading, and restoration
  • Manage less experienced team members, providing coaching to develop required expertise in civil engineering for tunnel and underground infrastructure projects
  • Provide direct input to the development and assessment of preliminary design options
  • Complete and review civil engineering analyses including vertical and horizontal infrastructure alignments, engineering design reports, technical drawings and specifications, material and equipment selection evaluations and construction contract documentation
  • Coordinate with municipalities and other stakeholders regarding project civil design components. Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to ensure all requirements are understood and accounted for in the overall design
  • Prepare and review engineering design reports and memoranda
  • Prepare and review design, tender and contract documents
  • Provide support to senior management in the coordination and management of projects including development and execution of work plans
  • Manage subconsultant works including subsurface utilities engineering (SUE), survey, geotechnical, archaeological, environmental and others
  • Manage client relations including attendance at meetings, responding to inquiries and preparing proposals
  • Liaise with project stakeholders including local governments, transit authorities, regulatory and approval agencies, contractors and suppliers
  • Deliver quality service to our clients and communities served


You bring to the role:
  • Civil, Structural or Geotechnical Engineering degree from an accredited university. Graduate degree(s) would be considered a definite asset
  • Professional Engineer with the P.Eng. designation in the Province of Ontario (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 6-10+ years of experience in the design and construction of tunnels and underground infrastructure with an emphasis on civil engineering design
  • Excellent working knowledge of MS Office is mandatory. Experience with industry standard design and analysis software including CADD is preferred
  • Experience with a variety of project delivery approaches including Design-Build, Design-Bid-Build and a variety of project funding arrangements including P3
  • Experience working with government and regulatory agencies
  • Detailed knowledge of contract document preparation
  • Experience with applicable design codes and standards
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, exercise independent judgment, interact with other staff, collaborate with other disciplines, and mentor junior staff
