POSITION: Section Mine Planner

JOB GRADING: D-Lower

DEPARTMENT: Technical Services

SITE: South Deep Gold Mine





Minimum Requirements:

  • Be in possession of a Grade 12 Certificate.
  • Be in possession of a Degree in Mining Engineering, (BSC/BTech).
  • Be in possession of Mine Overseers Certificate.
  • BSc (Hons) (Geology) or BTech (Survey) and Government Survey Certification (advantageous).
  • Have at least 5 years planning experience within a mining environment.
  • More than 6 years planning experience within a mining environment (advantageous).
  • Underground mining experience (advantageous).
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and the environment, as determined by the risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupational Health and Safety Centre.


Key Competencies


  • To co-ordinate and develop short term mining plans to optimize the extraction of the ore body, contribute towards the safe, profitable and cost effective mining of mineral reserves and the development of new Mineral Reserves. Develops the rolling operational plan.




Duties and Responsibilities:

  • evelop 3-month rolling plans on a monthly basis (short term plans) to be aligned with the medium term planning and long term business plan.
  • Interpret the operational efficiencies and business plan requirements in developing the 3-month rolling plan.
  • Resource scheduling of mining activities to comply with the targets of the business plan with integration of backfill, secondary support, engineering services, necessary logistics and other related activities.
  • Develop and enhance mine designs in compliance with statutory and company requirements.
  • Ensure that the short-term plan is well communicated and understood by all relevant parties.
  • Ensure that tactical requirements for the Mine Planning Department are implemented by advising Management and stakeholders on related matters and provides input for company policies and procedures.
  • Inform Management on tactical issues within the scope of Mine Planning Unit's function that do or could impact on business. Offers recommendations for solutions to address such situations.
  • Ensure that matters of tactical value are executed within the Mine Planning Department's function by conducting regular follow-ups and reviews on related policies and procedures as well as assisting and advising where necessary.
  • Optimization of the mine plan in accordance with the flexibility framework of South Deep Mine.
  • Liaise with all departments to gather information requires to optimize the short term plan.
  • Participate and provide the necessary guidance in planning meetings.
  • Provide all necessary information to measure compliance to plan.
  • Highlight deviations to the business plan to Management, provide remedial action.
  • Monitor and analyze mining modifying factors.
  • Participate and provide input to mining engineering related optimization studies.
  • Ensure that the appropriate management information database is in place, maintained, interpreted and monitored in line with the Unit requirements e.g. record keeping, reporting, reconciliations, surveys, audits, reporting and control systems.
  • Undertake continuous research in new technology, systems and application thereof to effect improvement in results by implementing and monitoring results of new technology, literature search completing feasibility studies, attending relevant technology forums e.g. conferences, seminars, workshops, colloquiums.
  • Coach and mentor subordinates on mine planning practices and principles encompassing mine-planning standards to be applied
