About the role

We are looking for a Geotechnical Superintendent with at least 5 years' experience in block cave mining to join our diverse team at Oyu Tolgoi. The Geotechnical Superintendent will be responsible for managing the day to day execution activities for the Oyu Tolgoi block cave and providing mentoring and direction as a joint leader of the Geotechnical Team.

Working a 5 Day On /2 Day Off residential or 4 Week On/2 Week Off - FIFO roster, and reporting to the Manager Geology & Geotechnical Services, you will be:
  • Managing and publishing daily, weekly and monthly geotechnical execution plans
  • Implementing best practice guidelines in geotechnical engineering, mine design and mining operations.
  • Conducting rock mass assessments/ stability assessments and developing ground support recommendations for incorporation into the mine design and planning.
  • Implementing operating procedures for all geotechnical activities and quality assurance/ quality control practices.
  • Evaluating all ground support quality assurance/ quality control data to verify the installation and effectiveness of support systems.
  • Verify compliance of the support systems with the contract specifications and Ground Control Management Plan (Ground Control Management Plan).
  • Verify compliance of the Geotechnical caving rules specific to the undercut advance sequence and production buildup and production schedule as governed by the OT Cave Management Plan (CMP) and associated Seismic Hazard management Plan (SHMP).
  • Undertaking appropriate reaction to monitoring data and damage mapping to apply corrective trigger action response plan (TARP) to preventative support maintenance (PSM)
  • Providing training and communication to national workforce in geotechnical awareness associated with cave mining and rock mass hazard recognition.
  • Mentoring and developing junior engineers to ensure that technical capability within the organization continues to grow.

What you will bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Mechanical, Civil or Mining Engineering or other relevant disciplines
  • Minimum 5 years in a supervisory Underground Geotechnical role
  • Core underground geotechnical engineering experience in cave mining
  • Ground support design and ground control expertise
  • Rock mass data acquisition (through core logging, face mapping) and rock mass characterization skills
  • Geotechnical monitoring system installation, data acquisition and data analysis
  • Competent in the use of mine modelling software the likes of Deswik, AcQuire, AutoCAD, RocScience, and Map3D for underground design and data interrogation is a highly recommended.
  • Use of standard Microsoft Office suite tools
  • Strong communication skills and project management expertise

Where you'll be working

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper / Gold open pit mine with a brownfields underground mining project. The site is located in the Gobi Desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20-year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
