Based in Mauritania, Kinross Tasiast is set to become one of the great gold finds of our generation. It is the first mine in a highly prospective greenstone belt, located within an extensive gold system that is largely underexplored.

Job Description

Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the Geology Superintendent is accountable for establishing and implementing best practice systems, procedures and operational support processes.

Job Responsibilities

This includes leading a team of around 70 persons, including geologists, grade control technicians, samplers, and QA/QC personnel.
  • Model and estimate the resource and reserves model
  • Perform and report on the annual estimation of the resources.
  • Maintain short and long range block models for scheduling and planning purposes.
  • Improve predictive grade models.
  • Lead the reconciliation process across the business.
  • Oversee all aspects of grade control and near-pit exploration.
  • Ensuring that all geological data is appropriately collected, safely stored and accessible (mapping, logging, interpretation)
  • Develop and establish procedures in order to respect standards and maximize economic profit of the operation.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and development to the Geology team, particularly local staff
  • Coordinate the training and succession planning of the team.
  • Apply safety and work procedures, policies and good practices.
  • Establish and develop links with local universities


Education and Experience

Education
  • Master of Science Degree/Doctoral Degree, PhD is preferred. Qualification in geology and geostatistics, with a minimum of 10 years' experience in the mineral industry.


Experience
  • Experience in open pit and exploration (regional exploration and/or near-pit exploration)
  • Strong experience with orogenic gold deposits and their structural contexts.
  • Proficiency in geology, mining geology and geostatistics (experience with non-linear geostatics and simulations). Strong computer skills. Knowledge of geometallurgy
  • Sound background, based on experience, in the practical application of resource estimation, geology modelling and Geostatistics.


Skills

  • Must be able to meet the qualifications for ‘Competent Person' and ‘Qualified Person' for the purposes of certifying resource/reserve statements, as defined in the NI43-101, Jorc and other applicable international standards.
  • Demonstrated ability in the production of technical documentation and reports.
  • Strong problem solving and judgment skills are required.
  • Strong supervisory, leadership and mentoring skills for the development of national staff technical skills.
  • Ability to work in a culturally diverse workforce; previous experience in West Africa would be an asset
  • Strong English skills, both oral and written.
  • French language skills would be an asset
