Description of Company

Barr is a consulting company that integrates engineering and environmental expertise to help clients develop, manage, process, and restore natural resources across North America and around the world. We have been employee owned since 1966 and trace our origins to the early 1900s. Today, we have over 900 employees across the U.S and Canada who work with clients in the mining, power, fuels, public, and manufacturing sectors, as well as attorneys, developers, and others with complex problems.

Why Choose Barr?

If you are looking for an employee-owned company that fosters a collaborative environment, focuses on providing exceptional client service, offers the opportunity to work on challenging projects, and makes employee safety a top priority, Barr is the place for you. In addition to a highly competitive benefits package, we offer mentor and coaching programs to help our employees develop and grow their careers, along with opportunities for volunteering and community involvement.

This person will serve as a key member of our Finance business support group, providing accounting support directly to project teams in one of our four business units. Tasks primarily include project setup, invoicing, and collections. Although the role is intended to be based in our Minneapolis office, the position will start as a work-from-home role due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For candidates with strong existing knowledge of and experience with Barr, other locations may be considered.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Helping project managers determine the appropriate project work breakdown structure, then setting up projects according to that structure in Deltek Vision
  • Preparing and sending invoices to clients in accordance with Barr’s requirements and contractual obligations
  • Preparing and running project reports from Deltek Vision, analyzing variances between budgets and actual spending, and recommending follow-up actions as appropriate
  • Working closely with project managers and principals to help ensure timely collection of outstanding receivables
  • Previewing project reports with project managers when warranted so that corrective actions can be taken prior to preparing invoices
  • Reviewing key administrative information such as proposals, work orders, and contracts to help ensure that appropriate staff members are informed and that invoices meet client requirements
  • Resolving accounting issues with client accounting or contracting staff when necessary
  • Analyzing and troubleshooting issues as required

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4 years of experience directly related to the job responsibilities described above
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with team members and clients
  • Strong technical and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness
  • A flexible working style and the ability to work independently and with teams to meet client and project needs
  • Working knowledge of at least one accounting software package
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and experience with advanced functions of Excel, such as pivot tables and charts
  • Superior task management skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and following-up
  • Able to work with multiple internal clients in a fast-paced environment
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in accounting, business administration, or a related field
  • Experience using Deltek Vision software
