About this role

Strategic Resource Development (SRD) assists in setting the long-term direction for Newmont's operations and projects by identifying and assessing alternatives to define an asset's optimal development pathway in alignment with Newmont's corporate strategy. Through both quantitative and qualitative analysis, the SRD team articulates options for value maximization and risk mitigation across the full value chain. Throughout an SRD engagement, the Evaluations team supports financial modelling, economic evaluation, and communication of technical and commercial options.

Your role will consist of

As an intern, you will be responsible for implementing specific Strategic Resource Development projects, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of your department. The exact projects will be established according to your availability, interest, skills, and experience, in addition to the specific business needs.

Possible projects include :
  • General support to the SRD team for financial modelling, analysis and reporting
  • Development of real-time data visualization through Tableau
  • Support standardization of tools and templates for analysis and reporting during future SRD engagements
  • Support the development of a framework to incorporate Newmont's climate change objectives into the financial modelling and communication of SRD outcomes


The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work; other work may also be assigned.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

  • Graduate students preferred, graduating in December 2021 or later - targeting MBA candidates or those pursuing a Master's in Mineral Economics or Finance. We will consider other similar disciplines.
  • Experience in mining and/or passion to learn about the hard-rock mining industry preferred
  • Exceptional financial modelling capabilities with experience developing discounted cash flow valuation models
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills
  • Strong organization, project and time management skills
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; comfort engaging across Newmont's global teams as an ambassador for the SRD team
  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  • Valid work authorization to work in the United States for this position.

Working conditions and location

Summer intern positions begin in May 2021 and conclude in August 2021. The exact dates are flexible depending on each student's availability and our business need. Our internships are full-time paid positions (40 hours/week).

This internship is based at our corporate headquarters in Denver, CO. It is possible some travel may be required to one or more of Newmont's sites. There is ample opportunity for internal networking within our company.

T he hourly rate offered for this overtime-eligible role is $ 20 (Freshman) - $36 (PhD). The hourly rate is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The hourly rate offer will not be based on a candidate's wage rate history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about wage rate history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont. This role is not eligible for benefits except for as applicable by law.
