About this role

What will you be responsible for?

The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will work in a quasi matrix structure directly collaborating with the Sr. Director Geotechnical & Hydrology, within the Technical Services Team based in Denver. In addition, The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will work with the existing open pit and underground mine sites within the South American Region and regional projects to establish the systems and procedures are in-place so that the relevant geotechnical data is collected, accurately stored and analyzed. This person will also ensure operations are executing their established Ground Control Management Plans (GCMPs) and related operating procedures.

The Principal Geotechnical Engineer will work in the development of the analysis tools, as needed, to support the operations as well as facilitating technology and knowledge transfer to the mining operations. This incumbent will work together with the Corporate Global Geotechnical Group to ensure that multi-functional constraints, goals, opportunities and risks are accounted for, and a full and clear path forward is mapped for current operating problems, stage gate projects and new mines. The Principal Geotechnical Engineer works with the operations to increase bench strength and mentoring of less experienced members of this global fraternity.
Additionally, the incumbent will ensure geotechnical standards and acceptable practices are applied to:

• Mine Planning,
• Mine Operations,
• Dewatering,
• Blasting,
• Water management (as it relates to geotechnical stability),
• Heap leach pad and waste rock facilities, and
• Tailings facilities.

In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

• We maintain a high focus on safety by supervising implementation of field practices at the operations.
• We work with operations to:
• Setup of data collection procedures for mapping, logging, testing and monitoring
• Use appropriate testing programs to resolve intact rock and rock mass strength;
• Create guidelines for QC\QA for laboratory testing
• Provide mentorship on rock mass and soil classification systems and use
• Provide mentorship on database management and data storage
• Develop geotechnical modelling of lithology, alteration, structure, rock mass, groundwater etc.
• Develop geotechnical analysis and design using synthetic rock mass, kinematic, limit equilibrium, numerical, probabilistic etc.
• Implement and check geotechnical monitoring systems and measurement techniques (data collection, storage and analysis)
• Define the geotechnical parameters required for blasting design and procedures to limit damage to interim or final walls
• Establish procedures for blast final wall damage evaluation and reporting
• Perform mine-to-mill testing in the field for throughput and relationship to geotechnical parameters;
• Perform depressurization techniques and effects on stability;
• Measure how surface water may erode slope/soil;
• Perform soil slope and foundation monitoring;
• Set up training programs for all or any above.
• We work with operating sites to define and setup a review mechanism of the Ground Control Management Plan to assess risks, for both underground and open pit operations.
• We review quality control aspects of geotechnical processes at Newmont SA Mining operations, provide feedback and assist with corrective actions.
• We supply geotechnical engineering support to existing mine sites on an impromptu pull fashion.
• We perform peer review of AFE's and studies relating to the geotechnical aspects of mining operations, to ensure compliance with standards and strategic directions in hydrological and geotechnical engineering process.
• We collaborate with Strategic and Regional Mine Planning, identifying geotechnical ideas and opportunities that will provide improved returns and advise the business on the best actions to realize the benefits.
• We provide experienced input of the Geotechnical Risk into the Mine Planning.
• We provide experienced recommendations to the development and implementation of systems and standards for geotechnical aspects of mining operations in collaboration with the Global Geotechnical Group.
• We drive innovation and the development of geotechnical tools that could improve safety and the quality and productivity of tasks.
• We mentor regional geotechnical personnel, identify and coordinate their development needs, and assist in the management of their succession plans.

Required Knowledge

• Ground control plans for open pit and/or underground;
• Geotechnical methods and design for open pit and/or underground;

• First-hand site experience taking care of major geotechnical failures.
• Basic knowledge of:

Required Experience

• At least 10 years of validated experience in surface and/or underground mining.
• M.Sc. Mining/Geotechnical or Geological Engineering
• Operations as Chief or Principal Hydrological or Geotechnical Engineer with groups of at least 5 professional staff.

Desired Experience:

• Overseas work experience in 1st, 2nd and 3rd world countries.
• Start-up experience.
• Project Evaluation at the concept-level to ongoing operations stages.
• Well networked into industry specialists and consultants.
• Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software.
• Ability to build and maintain strong communications network with peers, Project Managers, Mine Managers, Chief Engineers, and JV partner representatives.
• Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills.
• Strong technical writing, group presentation, and social skills including cultural sensitivity.

Working conditions & location

Where you will be located!

• Based at the Newmont SA Regional office in Miami or the Corporate office in Denver
• Travel (30-50% of work time) to domestic and international operations. Travel can be at a moment's notice to overseas or domestic locations, including Newmont and Non-Newmont locations and Greenfield sites.
  

The salary range offered for this role is $ 127,000 to 167,160 . The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience. The salary offer will not be based on a candidate's salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company's performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
