Myra Falls mine, situated in Strathcona Provincial Park, 90kms southwest of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, has been operational since 1965 and employs 450 employees and contractors.  The mine has a lifespan of over ten years. It is ramping up production to over 800,000 metric tonnes of zinc, lead and copper ore per annum, key commodities in the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

The Myra Falls mining operation was previously owned by leading global zinc and lead producer Nyrstar. Following the company’s financial restructuring in 2019, Trafigura became a majority shareholder, and the mine is now part of the Trafigura Mining Group portfolio. Trafigura Mining Group’s assets extend across Europe, Africa, North America and Latin America, ranging from wholly-owned facilities to joint ventures and minority investments.

The trading business is supported by industrial investments and assets, including majority ownership of global zinc and lead producer Nyrstar; a significant shareholding in global oil products storage and distribution company Puma Energy; global terminals, warehousing and logistics operator Impala Terminals; Trafigura Mining Group; and Galena Asset Management.

Trafigura has achieved substantial growth over recent years, increasing revenue from USD12 billion in 2003 to USD147 billion in 2020.

We are looking to hire Mechanic, reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor. The Mechanic will be responsible for providing provide maintenance support to the operations by repairing and maintaining underground mobile equipment.

Accountabilities:   

  • Promote awareness and comply with site standards and procedures in HSEC;
  • Demonstrate effective performance in achieving agreed HSEC goals in support of the department, site and company standards;
  • Promote awareness by reporting and managing all potential hazards;
  • Take responsibility for the safety of all personnel, including yourself, at Myra Falls.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintaining effective short and long–term maintenance of mobile equipment;
  • Assisting in monitoring for effective preventative and breakdown mechanical maintenance procedures;
  • Liaising with Supervision and Maintenance Planning regarding parts and consumables requirements and plans;
  • Continually reviewing the most appropriate mobile maintenance methods equipment and plans;
  • Provide progressive Processing operations through: keeping up to date with new developments in techniques and computing for maintenance of mobile equipment and assisting in development of new techniques and procedures that will streamline mobile maintenance processes;
  • Actively participate in the Asset Management department team to support and promote agreed decisions of the department;
  • Support effective discipline, communication and relationships within the team and between teams;
  • Consistently apply Workplace Management Procedures to ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and visions and values;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • BC or Interprovincial Red Seal Heavy-Duty Mechanic certification required;
  • Underground experience and familiarity with underground equipment an asset;
  • 5-10 years’ experience in maintenance, within a mining, construction, or OEM environment;
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair engine, drive train, hydraulic and electrical faults;
  • Able to use electrical diagnostic equipment for downloads and trouble shooting;
  • Proficient in heating tip and cutting using oxy/acetylene torches;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Mines Regulations.
