POSITION: Supervisor Engineering Shafts


DEPARTMENT: Engineering - Infrastructure

SITE: South Deep Gold Mine

Minimum Requirements:

  • Be in possession of a Grade 12/N3 Qualification
  • Be in possession of a Shift Supervisor Certificate
  • Be in possession of a Permanent Blasting Certificate
  • Be in possession of a Onsetter Certificate
  • Be willing to work extended hours on an ad hoc basis
  • Be in possession of a valid drivers' license (EB)
  • Have at least 2 years' experience as a Miner/Timberman in a Shaft environment
  • Have previous Shaft Foreman experience
  • Be computer literate in MS Office Suite
  • Be declared medically fit for the position and the environment, as determined by the risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupational Health and Safety Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening Test

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyse breakdowns of previous shift at the beginning of each shift by evaluating previous corrective measures and allocate resources accordingly
  • Communicate equipment information and changes to relevant stakeholder to minimize production delays
  • Conduct Shaft examination in terms of the Mines Code of Practice
  • Continuously analyses equipment efficiencies to recommend or implementing improvements and changes to maximize equipment utilisation
  • Control the magazines, including handling, controlling, receiving and issuing explosives
  • Co-ordinate and monitor equipment availability to ensure adherence to production parameters
  • Ensure the availability of approved mining layouts and production plans
  • Over-inspect subordinates in their daily activities to ensure maintenance according to organisational standards and the maintenance requirements
  • Perform lockout/tagout and risk assessments
  • Responsible for maintaining water tunnels, declines and change houses
  • Perform administrative duties to ensure record accuracy and availability, budget compliance and spares availability
  • Required to work according to the Mine's Code of Practice, and report any observations of this not being done
  • Required to work overtime, do standby and be available for call-outs should the need arise
  • Effective and safe transportation of men, material and ore
  • Coordinate maintenance of the shaft, loading station, bins, shaft bottom and other shaft stations and levels
  • Co-ordinate and supervise all slinging work
  • Ensure full compliance to all standards, regulations and instructions
  • Railbound tramming and shaft operations
  • Perform all duties relevant to the position
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Sound planning (time management), leading and organizational abilities
  • Able to work at heights
