About the role

We are looking for a Power Controller Maintainer to work as part of our Power Supply team to ensure duties are performed in a safe, efficient manner with a focus on teamwork and quality results.

You will be working a 9 day fortnight, 10 hour roster and as this position provides relief coverage to the Power Controller team. You will be required to work a relief rotating day and night shift roster as needed.

Training in High Voltage Switching Operations and Power Controlling Operations will be provided to the successful candidate.

Reporting to the Power Supply Maintenance Crew Leader and working in a collaborative and diverse team within Power Supply, you will be:
  • Responsible for the maintenance and continuous improvement of high voltage assets, infrastructure and distribution systems
  • Understand high voltage and maintenance procedures and work practices and maintain consistent application of standards
  • Identifying root causes of breakdowns and implementing solutions to eliminate them
  • Operate the high voltage assets to ensure a continuity of electrical supply to Boyne Smelter
  • Preparing, checking and participating in high voltage switching procedures.
  • Liaising with external power providers
  • Leading teams as required to complete specific task or projects
  • Protection relay programming and settings changes
  • Secondary injection of various relay types including, ABB, Siemens Siprotec, GE Multilin, SEL series
  • Primary injection testing of Current transformers and Voltage Transformers.

What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team.
  • A trade qualification Queensland Electrical Trades License.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience in high voltage industry
  • Understanding of MV distribution protection schemes
  • Experience of testing a wide range of Protection Relays
  • Experience of primary injection testing
  • Experience in HV and LV switchboard commissioning and testing
  • Experience in Circuit Breaker, CT and VT testing
  • Full understanding of schematic drawings and electrical protection schemes
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively as part of a team and to autonomously manage your workload
  • Strong ability to clearly communicate with team members and stakeholders
  • A commitment to continuous improvement by identifying process and cost saving initiatives
  • A willingness to learn and enthusiasm to develop new skills as required
  • Good computer skills including the use of SAP would be desirable
  • A license in elevated work platforms and forklift is beneficial but not essential.

Where you'll be working

Boyne Smelters Limited is Australia's second largest aluminium smelter with a 1,000-person strong workforce. Located approximately 20km south east of Gladstone at Boyne Island on the Central Queensland coast, BSL produces around 500,000 tonnes of aluminium per annum.

Activities at BSL include manufacturing carbon anodes in the carbon plant, aluminium production (smelting) in reduction lines, and casting of molten material into aluminium products ready to ship. The smelter is connected via a conveyor belt to the Queensland Alumina Limited refinery for the supply of alumina.
