About the role

We are looking for a Manager Portfolio Metals (Pacific) to join us today! The Portfolio Manager is responsible for maximising the short to medium term return to Rio Tinto from its Aluminium assets in the Pacific region by optimising the product portfolio and working closely with sales to grow the book (and profitability) through origination and 3rd party trading. The Portfolio Manager supervises a team that executes the product strategy and manages the book, from deal structuring, pricing to hedging, which contributes to the long term strategic sales and marketing plan. The Portfolio team assists the metal management team with the metal balance and internal relationships across our various cast houses. The Portfolio Manager is a key player in Sales and Operational Planning (S&OP) to provide various trade-off analysis that are used to recommend/provide decision making support to the leadership.

The role will contribute to the profitability of Rio Tinto by working and co-operating with all members of the Sales and Marketing team (regionally and globally) as well as with operational (casthouse) personnel.

This role is a great opportunity for a driven commercial professional who thrives in a team leadership environment. Reporting to the General Manager Pacific Metal Sales, you will be:
  • Leading the Portfolio team ensuring that the group maximises the long-term profitability of our casthouses and sales and marketing functions by organising and managing APAC book activities in the region
  • Contributing to the volume, quality, price and margin targets set for the overall RTA Primary Metal Pacific team, and ensuring that the business is sustainable over time
  • Managing the book optimizing positions, locations, conducting hedges and providing pricing recommendations for all Products within agreed guidelines and ensuring agreements are executed by appropriate contracting channels and appropriate hedging executed (when required)
  • Having a trading mindset use of options in contracts to enhance profitability and improve position management, originate opportunities (buy/sell), optimizing the product portfolio to capture market opportunities
  • Managing the development of the financial forecast and 5-year plan
  • Leading the Portfolio team to develop the go-to-market strategy with input from sales
  • Owning the commercial integrity of RTA commercial product costing and profitability metrics
  • Understanding and measuring the key value drivers for Aluminium
    Keeping abreast with industry news, changing trends, economic indicators, and competitors engaging with Market Analysis and Commercial Markets Desk to gain market insights; understanding trade flows to identify opportunities and impact on RTA product strategy
  • Contributing to a detailed understanding on implications of customer, product, volume, location and pricing relationships between customers in the same region and between countries
  • Providing inputs into the formulation of overall commercial strategy for the product group or business unit, including marketing strategy, product and customer account planning, technical marketing, pricing and brand management.
  • Exploring improvement opportunities for casthouse optimisation
  • Serving as a central point of contact for casthouse and commercial liaison, and product commercialisation
  • Interacting with the Atlantic portfolio team to identify and manage intercompany sales to North America and Europe
  • Leading or contributing to the Sales and Marketing improvement projects and track visibility of the value pipeline initiatives
  • Assisting the Sales Director with customer negotiations
  • Participating in digital projects that will give us further competitive advantage, optimize/grow the business and improve efficiency of processes

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
  • B.A. Engineering, Business, Finance or equivalent
  • At least 12 years of progressive experience in sales and marketing across the mining and metals industry
  • Relevant industry background gained from a competitor or company in a related Aluminium industry
  • Strong acumen for sales, marketing, commercial and business development
  • Proven track record of building business and hitting sales targets
  • Proven leadership experience in inspiring and leading a high-performance team
  • Demonstrated ability to simplify complexity and present comprehensible and workable proposals to senior management
  • Demonstrated experience in prioritising and working through a networked organisation in achieving results

It will also be beneficial if you have:
  • Prior operational leadership experience in casthouse/smelters/mills
  • MBA
