Looking to take the next step in your career? Hatch is currently seeking a highly motivated Maintenance & Asset Integrity Technician to join our Business Practices, in Johannesburg office.

Our Technologies team is focused on the commercialisation and delivery of technologies across all three of Hatch’s sectors: Metals, Energy, Infrastructure. We’re a team of innovators and problem solvers who deliver custom and specialized engineering to deliver novel solutions and technologies.

In addition to developing new technologies and selecting and installing equipment in greenfield projects, we help our clients to get the most from their existing assets by providing field support, rebuild repairs, and retrofits. We also work with our clients to optimize their existing technologies to achieve the maximise benefit. 

As the successful candidate, you will:
  • Have a good working knowledge of smelters/furnaces and other pyrometallurgical processes.
  • Be familiar with Hatch furnaces and Hatch technologies deployed in pyrometallurgical processes.
  • Strive to become very well versed in the relevant technologies that Hatch offers to the market.
  • Apply asset management principles to coordinate and advise on site maintenance activities for clients.
  • Provide on-site support to maintenance crews, supervisors and the client
  • Provide remote maintenance support through the use of various condition monitoring and digitalization tools
  • Develop strategies and rollout of appropriate continuous monitoring and digitalization tools for site equipment and sub-assemblies
  • Develop asset trees / functional location structure and rank the criticality of equipment.
  • Lead forensic and root cause failure investigations following equipment failure
  • Assist the Engineering Manager/Project Manager with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to maintainability of equipment and design for maintenance
  • Collaborate with process, structural, control, instrumentation and mechanical and electrical engineers and designers in the detailed design of custom equipment, including equipment/technology design reviews, plant layout development, risk assessments and process hazard review studies
  • Provide site support, including field verification during construction, vendor fabrication assistance and vendor shop inspections.
  • Carry out assigned tasks within budget and schedule.


You bring to the role:
  • Mechanical or Electrical Diploma from an accredited institution, with 4+ years working experience
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites including remote sites
  • Willingness to be deployed to site on long term assignments
  • Experience in the mining and metals sector with a specific focus on the pyrometallurgical industry (furnaces & pyrometallurgical processes)
  • Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated critical and creative thinking and problem solving, and brings forward solutions for our clients' toughest challenges
  • Experience in asset management and plant maintenance systems (CMMS)
  • Experience in maintenance execution and site maintenance work
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team and coordinate site activities during routine maintenance support and during commissioning and ramp up following a rebuild
  • Ability to support and manage a team of site contractors and site supervisors
  • Ability to work independently and make sound technical decisions
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong customer/client focus
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, regulations and codes pertinent to relevant engineering disciplines
  • Working knowledge of operational environments, including typical SHEQ systems, maintenance management platforms and SOP’s
  • Adapts and embraces change
