Your role
The Global Center for Indigenous Community Relations' ("the Center") purpose is to advocate for excellence in engagement with Indigenous Peoples, both within Newmont and across the industry. The Center aspires to be a respected source of dialogue, collected knowledge and shared experiences to improve Newmont's practices and contribute to advancing the industry's approach to engagement with Indigenous communities. The Center is physically located within the North American Regional Office, it is global in its scope, and is part of Newmont's Corporate External Relations function.
What you will do
Fall intern positions begin in September 2021 and conclude in December 2021. The exact dates are flexible depending on each student's availability and our business need. Our internships are full-time paid positions (40 hours/week).
This internship is based in Vancouver, Canada, with the option for remote working. It is possible some travel may be required to one or more of Newmont's sites. There is ample opportunity for internal networking within our company.
As an intern, you will be responsible for implementing specific Global Center for Indigenous Community Relations projects, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of the Center. The exact projects will be established according to your availability, interest, skills, and experience, in addition to the specific business needs.
Possible projects include:
• Research into multiple topics including: cultural awareness training and capacity building, indigenous economic participation in the mining sector and the role of business in reconciliation movements in Canada and Australia
• General support to the Center for data analyses and reporting
• Support coordination of the Indigenous Peoples Working group and other internal networking
• Identify effective online and practical mechanisms for collecting and sharing best practice related to Indigenous engagement within Newmont

Training, skills & experience checklist
- Students graduating in December 2021 or later with a minimum of an undergraduate degree in social sciences, including Indigenous Studies, community development, environmental science. We will consider other similar disciplines as well as those completing graduate studies.
- Broad understanding of socio-economic issues and cultural awareness related to Indigenous communities in Canada, the US, Latin America and/or Australia.
- Strong communication abilities and emotional intelligence
- A self-starter who can manage time and project deliverables
- Strong research methods capability and writing skills
- Valid work authorization to work in Canada or the United States for this position.
