We are looking for a Project Field Engineer to manage a variety of moderate to major sized projects and studies for the Tailings Project and Engineering team located in Salt Lake City, Kennecott Copper business.

Rio Tinto Kennecott is a fully integrated mining operation located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, US. Kennecott is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto. For more than 110 years, Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich orebody of the Bingham Canyon Mine. Kennecott is a strong economic driver and strives to be a valuable community partner through strategic partnerships, charitable giving and sustainable development practices

This role is a great opportunity to join a truly global mining organization and be involved in the planning and delivery of projects from initiation to completion, and is focused on achieving objectives through managing resources, budgets, schedules, changes, and risks.

Reporting to the Principal Engineer - Projects and working in a collaborative community you will be:
  • Assisting the project manager for a variety of projects and technologies that will require you to leverage engineering, business and cross functional team management skills
  • Leading, planning and coordinating the study or implementation stages of projects, including the management of all functional areas
  • Ability to read and understand complex mechanical, structural and civil engineering plans and specifications.
  • Assisting with resourcing, procurement, contract management, and progress reporting
  • Accountable for safely and successfully delivering the project and business case by ensuring the results meet technical, quality, cost and schedule requirements as per the lifecycle stages
  • Planning and delivering relevant safety requirements into all activities, tasks and projects based on assessed hazards, identified critical risks and mitigating actions
  • Assisting with proper project governance and stage gate approvals
  • Oversee and coordinate project work activities
  • Execution of planning and integration with operations
  • Coordination of Pre-commissioning and commissioning activities
  • Operation of GIS systems to track construction as-builts and work progress

What you'll bring
  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Advanced degree in engineering, construction management, surveying or project management.
  • 5 - 10 years of progressively responsible experience in project experience in general construction
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience with computer system applications, including Word, Excel, Power Point, MS Project

Beneficial for this role:
  • Experience using AutoCAD and GIS.
  • Broad understanding of program management, project management, project controls, business improvement, contract management, risk management & change management
  • Knowledge of Project based software tools and systems
  • Experience with operational personnel coordination
  • Experience with cross functional team management
  • Critical Risk Management and practices
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills incident management
  • Quality assurance, pre-commissioning and commissioning experience a plus
  • High level of schedule development and management experience

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
