Rainy River Mine
Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.

The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role

Schedule: Shift 5/2 4/3 – 9.5 hour days

Position Reports To: General Manager

Position Overview

The role of the Finance Controller is to lead and give strategic direction to financial and accounting functions at Rainy River mine site. To ensure processes, procedures, compliance, and systems contribute to the successful execution of the mine’s business plan, optimize costs and enhance shareholder value. To work with the senior management team in determining the overall financial strategy of the mine. To optimize the allocation of resources, Operating and Capital costs and the stewardship of company assets.

Key Responsibilities

Lead all accounting and financial operations.
  • Develop and monitor financial plans, budgets, forecasts, Life of Mines (LOM) plans, controls, and accounting practices and ensure compliance with company policies, and financial regulations.
  • Review and analyze financial reports, budgets, forecasts and documentation to ensure accuracy and compliance, and regularly report all variances.
  • Analyze financial performance against key business metrics and document pertinent financial highlights that will enable management in decision making and determine progress against budgets.
  • Identify, investigate, and analyze potential operational improvement, as appropriate, based on variances in key metrics/trend and make proposal/recommendations for operational improvements (policy, procedures, processes, systems etc.)
  • Establish expense and spending policies that are in line with company practices to optimize spend and enforce site compliance.
  • Oversee and lead by establishing appropriate electronic financial and operational controls/systems and processes to optimize unit costs and Capital spend.
  • Implementing prescribed accounting and finance practices and ensuring compliance with Rainy River, New Gold’s accounting direction, policies and processes
  • Actively participate in the yearly audit and liaise with auditors in all audits to ensure deadlines are met and reporting is accurate and compliant with industry and company regulations.
  • Formulating strategic and long-term business plans by working with Operations and other site departments to continually optimize costs to strongly position Rainy River to further improve the LOM.
  • Continually analyze & develop Strategies, KPIs’ to track and monitor costs to optimize business performance.
  • Ensure employees at site are aware and informed about financial policies, practices, and philosophies.
  • Work to implement/shift budgeting practices to a Zero-base budget system.


Work with the Senior Management team to develop and achieve the overall financial strategy and goals of the mine.
  • Develop the overall strategy for the financial function including implementation approaches and cost-benefit analysis for proposed/recommended approaches to enhance shareholder value.
  • Work with senior management and other stakeholders to identify and analyze business requirements and its implications for Finance.
  • Identify gaps in cost optimization and recommend and implement targeted solutions.
  • Establish and monitor budgets and forecasts to ensure growth margins and quality solutions are met in line with LOM plans.
  • Fulfill all responsibilities under National & International policies on compliance and reporting and industry trends including signoffs.
  • Developing strategies that work to minimize financial risk. Analyzing market trends and best practices for implementation on site.
  • Developing external relationships with appropriate contacts, e.g. auditors, solicitors, bankers and statutory organizations in line with company policies to strongly position Rainy, New Gold in the market.


Provide leadership to the Finance team.
  • Build an appropriate team through recruitment and development.
  • Provide clear work objectives and expectations of the performance levels required to achieve business plans and production targets.
  • Ensure that training is provided in accordance with the current and future requirements of the mine.
  • Lead performance by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback and coaching to direct reports.
  • Promote and maintain a high-performance culture.
  • Drive safety culture within the team.
  • Keeping abreast of changes in financial regulations and legislation both at National and Internal levels.


Qualifications
  • 10-15 years of related experience
  • Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience at a senior level leading the finance team, preferably in a Mining setting
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • University degree in Finance
  • Professional Accounting Designation with certifications for sign off
  • Membership of Financial Institutions would be an added advantage
  • An analytical mind with strong negotiation skills
  • Commercial and business awareness
  • A keen eye for detail and desire to probe further into data
  • Ability to deliver on time constraints with a sense of urgency
  • Proven team and relationship building skills
  • Proven organizational and planning abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
