About the role

We are looking for a Manager Plant Technical and Quality to join the California Operations Senior Leadership team in Boron, California. This role is responsible for leading the teams to ensure the plant process technical engineering, sampling and laboratory analytical work is completed to support optimal operation of the plant. Additionally, this role oversees the Borates and Lithium Research and Development work to find new ways to utilize current products and further develop new products. This role is a great opportunity work with a diverse and talented team to make a tangible impact on the future of the Borates and Lithium business.

Reporting to the General Manager, you will:
  • Work closely with peers to deliver on sustainable step change improvements that impact the overall value chain.
  • Lead a diverse team to deliver new technology innovation studies and projects.
  • Focus commercially to support operational outcomes that deliver highest value and quality for the organization and customers in the short and long term.
  • Oversee technical support, troubleshooting, and test work to ensure short- and medium-term issues are being addressed.
  • Clearly communicate research and development work to senior leaders on an ongoing basis with alignment to the business's strategy.
  • Ensure high standard of routine process review and effective troubleshooting and laboratory testing are maintained by area metallurgists and technicians.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of innovative process improvements, work practices and equipment utilization which improve productivity and/or enhance equipment availability.
  • Support upgrading the general technical awareness of the leaders and their teams.
  • Follow a rigorous problem-solving methodology, analyze a broad range of data and interpret to deliver solutions to business-critical issues.
  • Engage with broader Rio Tinto organization to integrate wider R&D network

  • Experience running multi-disciplined teams of engineers and designers
  • The ability to make sound, pragmatic judgements and manage competing priorities
  • Bachelors or higher education in Engineering Chemical, Metallurgical or Process preferred
  • At least 7 years of experience with demonstrated leadership role
  • Experience in a similar role in processing or extraction industries, heavy industry, natural resources, mining or aluminum sector
